Someone posted a bit of information but this was about a year back. I think they were from the top of the valley above Ceret. I know the person said it worked but it's not cheap.

Expensive, slow and only worth considering if you cannot get ADSL.

It works with a satellite dish connected to your house that sends and receives data to/from the providers satellite dish which has a downlink to a station on the ground connected to the internet.

It is widely used in countries where they steal copper wire or in remote locations.

Where we're going, the provider keeps switching from French to Spanish so I'd never be sure that I hadn't run up a HUGE bill whilst chatting with my chums on here!!

That looks good because unlike other systems it can use the same dish as Sky and Freesat

Just a few thoughts that trouble me about this....

The download and upload speeds comapred to ADSL.
What happens if lots of people have them?
As you are transmitting information, how difficult would it be for a 3rd party to listen in to those transmissions.
What licenses do you need to install a transmitter capable of reaching the Astra satellite?
How much power does it use.
How effective is it in bad weather?

While were on this subject, any one know if the internet dongles on pay as you go have come down in price (the cost to use not buy) .

Last time i checked it was cheeper to go to the internet cafe than use one??

I'm not sure what compares but Orange has a dongle now. They have various flavours so visit their site. Go to the section for sans engagement.l

I know that Le Clerc has their own version and I think SFR does too. Maybe this is too dear but I doubt this will get lower than right now prices.

You must check coverage. It varies a great deal. I checked SFR for our village with Boulanger and it was hopeless.

Peter, I suspect that in 5 years (the date of the posts that you refer to) the latency problems have diminished but it would certainly be worth asking the question.
I have mentioned 3G above (SFR). Coverage isn't consistent.
Having said that I have found the 3 Network works for me in the UK and I'm currently using an Alice mobile dongle here in Italy.

3rd party listening in is probably a lot less likely than any of us using wirelss networks, domestic 3g or other, as the beam is higly directional (and up).

No licenses necessary in the uK. suspect simialr or France.

Bad weather can affect signal.

BUT all my experience is a few years old as we initially had a stalleite feed for our village network. Largely it worked well.
