We use Britanny Ferries almost every time. Overnight to Caen or St Malo gets you on the road early enough to make Perp in one day (about 9.5 hrs driving) The ferry is great - even before it leaves the dock you can be in the restaurant tucking into the lavish seafood buffet with a glass of child something nice. Then a cosy night tucked up in bed sets you up for the journey the following day.
Plymouth to Santander or Portsmouth to Bilbao is an enjoyable if pricey cruise but, in practice, doesn't save much driving time (it about 8 hrs).
Eurotunnel is almost always an excellent service and cheap. But its 10:30 hrs from Calais to Perp which really requires a night stop if you dont want to arrive exhausted.
Suggestions for en-route stops:
Les Orangeries in Lussac Les Chateux (then visit Oradour)
Futuroscope near Poitiers (IMAX heaven)
