Repairing Shutters damaged by blackbirds!

Hi,
The tops of Some of our shutters have been "eaten" by blackbirds. The damage is not so bad they need to be replaced, but they would benefit for being patched. I know this could be messy if not done well.
Has anyone suffered similar damage and found a good solution please?
