We were recently away from home for several weeks, and (foolishly) left our freezer powered up, with food in it. While we were away, the power lines into the house were hit by lightning, resulting in the most horrendous smell of rotting food in the freezer when we returned. We've cleaned (and cleaned) it, but can't get rid of the smell.

Can anyone advise/suggest ways of getting rid of the odours in the freezer?
Any advice will be most welcome.

The same thing happened to us one summer when the plug was knocked out inadvertantly and we were away for 4 weeks in France. I thought we may have to throw the fridge freezer away as nothing in the house, antibacterial cleaner, bicarbonate of soda etc worked. A local shop suggested Hg fridge cleaner. It took 2/3 goes but did do the job. Good luck!

A tubful of bicarbonate of soda placed in it should abosrb some smells.

Thanks, we're giving the bicarb a go at the moment. Next will come the lemons, onions and vinegar. Here's hoping.

Leave an open packet of reblochon cheese in it. The original smells will be totally overwhelmed.

The only slight snag is you may not find the replacement smell that great either.
