Hi all :)

It could be a very cold winter

Quote: The Central England Temperature Record, that goes back to 1659, recorded -0.8C as the average temperature up to December 29. This makes it equal coldest with 1890.

The coldest winter on record is 1683/84 at -1.17C (29F) just 67 years after the death of Shakespeare when Charles II was still on the throne. Frost fairs were held on the River Thames and the ground froze to a depth of 4ft in places.

If this winter breaks the record it would be the coldest in more than 1,000 years as temperatures are not believed to have gone below the current record since the beginning of the ‘Medieval Warm Period’ in 950.

Hi all :)

Flood crisis in Australia

Quote: The last road into the Australian city of Rockhampton was tonight cut off by water as Queensland's premier, Anna Bligh, warned that the floods which have overwhelmed the state may not recede for weeks.

"It looks like Rockhampton's in the middle of an inland sea. The amount of water coming down these river systems is nothing short of astonishing," said Bligh on a visit to the city. "Given the scale and size of this disaster, and the prospect that we will see water sitting potentially for a couple of weeks, we will have major issues to deal with throughout January."

Hi all :)

A chilly month in Florida

Quote: If you thought it was especially cold in December, it’s not just your imagination. The facts prove it, according to the National Weather Service, which announced Saturday that December 2010 set a record as the coldest December ever in Ft. Lauderdale. Miami, and Key West.

Forecasters say December was also the second coldest month ever in Key West.

Brisbane could be next

Quote: Tens of thousands of people have been told to flee Australia’s third largest city as catastrophic floods loom.

At least 40,000 homes are at risk from the waters expected to hit the centre of Brisbane today and tomorrow.

Floods raging down from the north combined with water released from a dam to prevent it bursting created a huge wave that was surging towards the city of two million people under sheets of drenching rain. Six inches fell in one half-hour period.

Posted by thumbelina - 18th January 2010

Taking the statistics from January 2003 - December 2010, February is the third wettest month of the year. October, January and February are the three wettest. July, June and August are the three driest.

There is no denying that October was wet in 2010 with some 173.9 mm of rain. But 2010, as a whole, was the fourth driest year since 2003. Following on from 2007, 2009 and 2008.

Cold weather in China

Quote: Heavy snow and unusually cold weather have swept across most parts of China this week, causing travel chaos on roads and on the sea, with forecasters predicting worse to come.

The worst sea ice in 30 years is threatening shipping and the livelihoods of fishermen on China's eastern coast and the situation is expected to worsen this week, with about 40 percent of the Bohai Sea's surface already frozen, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said on its website.

Hi all :)

Well it was only a matter of time, before we were blamed for the weather.

Quote: If the planet is warming, why is a third of America locked in a deep freeze, with record-low temperatures as far south as the Mexican border, where the thermometer in Ciudad Juarez plummeted Wednesday night to a bone-chilling 9-below zero?

Self-proclaimed planetary climate czar Al Gore thinks he has answer.

"As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now, and they say increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming," Gore write in a blog post. The Nobel Prize-winning former vice president was responding to a question posed by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, who wondered on air why global warming was such an urgent science policy priority when the New York City area had become a “tundra” this winter.
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/02/ ... l-warming/

So there is no real evidence for this, we just have to believe the politicians & certain scientists predictions.
Its a win, win scenario, if it gets warmer its down to us & if it gets colder, then we are told to expect extreme weather along the way.

Here's an article about the drought in the Amazon

Quote: A widespread drought in the Amazon rainforest last year caused the "lungs of the world" to produce more carbon dioxide than they absorbed, potentially leading to a dangerous acceleration of global warming. Scientists have calculated that the 2010 drought was more intense than the "one-in-100-year" drought of 2005.

Then it says
Quote: The Anglo-Brazilian team of researchers has emphasised that there is as yet no proof that the two highly unusual droughts in the Amazon are the direct result of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, but the scientists have warned that the world is gambling with its future if it fails to curb fossil fuel emissions.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scien ... 03892.html

We hear about C02 on a constant basis & how we should reduce the amounts that go into the atmosphere.
C02 does not cause temps to increase, its the temp that causes C02 to go up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWRqQ_iI7qQ

Now let's look at the Hockey Stick
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hocke ... _large.jpg
Here's a discussion about it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1k4mFZr-gE

The earth goes through many cycles & much has happened over thousands of years
We are living in a small part of a cycle, not really enough time to come to a conclusive answer.

Re: Info for March

Post by Sav »

BT wrote: I will be in St Cyp the last weekend of March. What temps can I expect ?
I have been there in Feb and found it quite cold at night.
Hi BT :)

Sorry i'm late in replying

Looking at the Languedoc stats
You can expect daytime temps to average out at just below 15°C & just under 5°C overnight
http://www.creme-de-languedoc.com/index.php

Looking at the last two years for Perpignan
2009 - March
Averages
High 16.9°C
Minimum 7.4°C
2010 - March
Averages
High 13.9°C
Minimum 5.8°C
http://www.meteociel.fr/

I would take something warm to wear in the evening, but day time temps should be mild.
Hope that helps ;)

Hi all :)

There may be Drought problems for some
Rainfall is down in 3/4 of the country
However, the Languedoc seems to have come out of the winter months quite well.
With Perpignan recording twice the amount of normal precipitation
http://tinyurl.com/4dhweko

How this reflects on the rest of the Pyrenees Orientales, only time will tell.
As these figures may not have any bearing on other towns/villages
