Hi all :)

Not much Arctic ice melting this summer

Quote: The summer of 2010 was unusually cold, according to the Centre for Ocean and Ice at the Danish Meteorological Institute. For almost the entirety of the June to August period, mean daily temperatures were below the corresponding daily temperatures over the past half century during which the Centre has maintained records.

Hi all :)

Tasmania feels the cold

Quote: Snowfall was reported in several areas and weather bureau records indicated it was the coldest September day Hobart had experienced since 1985.

Gusting winds brought down trees and spread debris, affecting traffic and power lines statewide.

I wonder if you,Sav (or anyone else for that matter), have heard of it ,or are a member?

It seems quite interesting, and covers weather topics from not just the UK,but all over the world as well.

No i'm not a member & they are asking for £25 to become one
It seems its only just started, so we shall see how it goes.
Hopefully level playing field reporting will be in effect

Just to throw on this one:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11903397
Professor Mark Maslin, director of the Environment Institute at University College London, said negotiators should pay renewed attention to the data.

"Those who hoped that global warming would just go away will be disappointed by today's announcements," he said.

"It shows that the science underpinning the negotiations at Cancun is correct, and adds further weight to the need for a globally negotiated and accepted deal on carbon emissions."

This is a comment that someone has posted to a Sky new article :

I cannot believe that the Met office haven't announced a major change in our weather patterns. These are not freak conditions but will be the norm from now on in.

The rapidly melting Polar ice-caps over the Summer released so much ice-cold fresh water into the North Atlantic that the Gulf Stream has been pushed 200 miles further south at the point of contact. It is the Gulf Stream and the accompanying warm air currents which push the much colder Artic fronts over the Baltic and Russia.

Basic Trigonmetry combined with Meterology shows that the warm Gulf Stream (which has been hitting the British Isles for the last 10,000 years), is now lapping the coast of Portugal.

The UK is on the same Latitude as Moscow, so without the protection of the Gulf Stream we get the same weather patterns.

I wish the Met Office would stop acting surprised and just help prepare the Nation for -30C in January

IF THEY DON'T THOUSANDS WILL DIE !!!

The Gulf Stream does keep us warmer here in the Northern Hemisphere & if it did shut down, then we would be looking at a colder scenario.
Only time will tell

Here is an article on the subject

This guy "Chris R" is either mentally unbalanced or has a very short memory !

Even in my lifetime I can remember cold snaps in December, with attendant snow, frost and icy roads etc. I mean, aren't most Christmas Carols full of "deep midwinter","earth as hard as iron" imagery, and most of those were written in Victorian times.?

There's never any shortage of sensationalism when it comes to the weather, and folk like Chris R never let the facts get in the way of a good rant. No doubt he and his ilk will have some "rational ,global warming" explanation when we have a mild spell in mid January,(which is quite possible).

Hi all :)

Record cold for Miami

Quote: Miami saw a record broken today that had remained unchallenged since 1897 -- record low temperatures of 63 degrees, two degrees lower than 113 years ago.

The low temps are the result of a powerful Arctic front moved across South Florida on Sunday, behind it some of the coldest air of the season.

john wrote: Poor dears. My heart bleeds for them. A record LOW of 63 (or 17° in real money) !!! They'll be having to turn down the Aircon in those Art Deco palaces on S Beach a couple of notches next.......
Makes you wonder why those brits were heading for those heaters
It would have felt tropical, if they had spent any time in the UK recently

Also
Quote: In Fort Lauderdale, a low temperature record of 42 degrees for Dec. 7 that had been in place for 169 years was broken, said Dan Gregoria, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.

john wrote: That's really odd,Sav. I've been to that area quite a few times and Ft Lauderdale and Miami are both low lying, sited between the Atlantic and the Everglades and are only about 25 miles apart. Why would there be a 21 deg temp difference between the two cities?
Well thanks for the job john
It seems that Miami is warmer than Fort Lauderdale, but i'm unable to find anything conclusive on this.
Its about a 30 mile difference
FL had the record on the 7th, which was a day after Miami.
But they had an arctic front go though the area on Sunday, so you have to depend on their temp sensors being accurate

Hi all :)

Posted by thumbelina - 26th November 2010

Interesting stuff from the MF site.

Quote:
Quelle est la chute de neige la plus précoce enregistrée à Paris ?

Copyright Météo-France / Pascal Taburet

Hi all :)

A chilly climate conference

The irony, it burns. Do you think maybe Gaia is trying to send the U.N. and the delegates a message? One record low was funny, three in a row was hilarious, a new record low for the month of December was ROFL, but now six straight days of record lows during the U.N. COP16 Global Warming conference? That’s galactically inconvenient. The whole month so far has averaged below normal

Coldest December in over 40 years

Le mois de décembre n'est pas encore fini que l'on peut déjà commencer à dresser un bilan de ce début d'hiver particulièrement rigoureux, essentiellement dans le nord de la France.
