Hate to ask but does any one know where I can get some Patak-type cuury sauces? Even better popadoms and mango chutney. I've got recipes and should try my own but just in case ....

I normally buy at the Asia Center in Mas Guerido. They have a big selection and it has exactly what you noted. I had a monk fish last night-the recipe came from "Come Dine With Me" a few weeks back. It was fixed with the Patak's Balti sauce and also a bit of mango chutney. Miammm!
I haven't tried the Orchid Blossom previously posted but it's supposed to be good too.
Just near the EDF/GDF building there's another place which has a selection of Patak sauces. This is called "Mexotic" and you can find a lot of Asian foods, Mexican items, and the curry sauces too. They do have some fresh produce too. This is located on the old Route du Prade. It's almost under the A9 overpass.

I bought some "Rajah" vindaloo paste yesterday in the asian shop/cafe in Perpignan. Its just down on the left opposite the Casino Supermarket as you are entering Perpignan. As a matter of interest has anyone eaten there. The food on display looked very good and it was very busy.
They do have a selection of milder pastes too.

I agree with you John you cant beat the Asian Centre for choice, they seem to sell everything. I just couldnt be bothered to go there yesterday after a visit to the dermatologist so went to the place in Perps which was close at hand to where I was parked.

Oh come on! The Pataks paste in the Asia Center may be 1€ more than in the cheapest supermarket but they have a bigger choice. A jar will make you about 10 curries. That's 10c per curry. I don't believe anyone in the western world is that poor.edann42 wrote:Strange! I've always found the Asian Centre well overpriced!!Maybe it's because I'm poor!!!!!!!
There are lots of other things there that are goof VFM. Rice, noodles, pulses, frozen roti breads, fresh coriander, big bags of spices.

If you really like Asian foods, you can buy fish sauce, ketchup manis, oyster sauce, Thai basil-fresh, Dok-Phak-Pene (not sure what this is called in English but it's like chives with a flower at the top and it all tastes like garlic), various hot sauces, coconut milk, soy beans, tropical fruits, hot Thai peppers, even hotter peppers, and the produce arrives on Thursday normally. Many of the restaurant owners buy their products at the Asia Center. It's all making me hungry.Santiago wrote:Oh come on! That's the way to make the best curry anyway!edann42 wrote:Must be me then! Will have to continue making do with just using spices (Good value for money at AC) and making my own!
I have a book called 50 Great Curries of India which, despite the crappy title, is an excellent book for learning how to blend spices to create the different flavours.
Rachel has ordered a load of Packet Curries off the internet. I am tempted to buy in bulk and sell them from the winery if there is sufficient demand. They are more expensive than Pataks pastes (€3.50 each) but more interesting flavours and less cooking involved. PM me if you are intrested.

I just read something on the Motley Fool forum in the UK. Aldi is flogging Patak Korma curry paste for £0.99 per jar.
Normally the Aldi sales arrive in France a bit later so watch this place.

Actually, I did look direct onto the Aldi UK web site and they have various pastes but the korma paste wasn't shown. I think that they did have a vindalooooooo listed toooooo.polremy wrote:korma's for wimps, blackduff!!
i'll have to wait for the vindaloo or at least the madras.
There are some other curry products are listed too on this sale flyer. Something will float your boat.

Here's the site from the Aldi co.uk. Take a look around for the specials-lots of deals.
But, no wendi-and-lou pastes.

My wife went to the Asia Center yesterday. There's a freebie book called "Le Malin Gourmand" and it's a very nice book. Lots of recipes, test-tastes and even a comparatif product.
If you're in the area, pickup one of these booklets. Lots of good information inside.

I just bought a polythene pack of Shere Khan Restaurant (English-made by Simpson Ready Foods/Manchester) hot Madras curry-sauce from Carrefour/Argeles for €3.95 - looks enough for 4 people, maybe... Will report back for taste, value etc. If it IS hot, I guess the French won't like it, so it won't sell too well. It was in the 'Cuisine du Monde' section

Of course Casino is a bit longer from Canet, plus, you cannot find any parking in Casino.pooky wrote:I was in the Asian centre with a friend and noticed their fresh ginger was 7€ something , Casino 2€ something , just as fresh ! I can now say the Rajah vindaloo paste bought in Perpignan is not half as good as the Pataks vindaloo paste. Neither the texture nor the taste are as good and it is far too salty.
