John Elaine,
Terracotta is absorbent and generally they are difficult to clean without damaging the surface, but conventional out door tiles have the same problem where you damage the fibres.
Vinegar with a scrubbing brush works, but it will then weaken the fibres and will get discoloured easier after.
Here is a link to a professional Tile Page.

With advice, they basically say the same as me.
Also here is a link to the general cleaning tips from " How Clean Is Your House".

It may be an old wives tale, but when I was a kid, ( few years ago. !!) Saltpeter, ( Potassium Nitrate, ) was an old tale then...for removing rust.
Just looked on Google, but no confirmation there.......Must have been when I was more interested in the Monks Gun Powder...
I have rust marks from an old steel wheel barrow legs on my tiles, my next experiment will be with dilutions of " Acide Chlorhydrique " ( which you can buy at any BRICO strangely, this is FRANCE...) I will keep you informed as to how it works...!!!!!
Best of luck....Paul....

Removing Rust
Iron deposits in water can cause ugly rust stains on your sink or shower tile. To remove rust from your tiles, use a commercial rust removing powder. To prevent damage to your tile, mix each tablespoon of rust remover with two tablespoons of poultice powder (diatomaceous earth) before using it. Add small amounts of water to the rust remover mixture until it has the texture of paste. Apply the solution over the stains and cover them with plastic lids. Leave the whole thing for the next twenty-four hours. After removing the poultice, if you find the rust has not gone entirely, remix and reapply the rust remover poultice

There are others - I searched Google UK using remove rust from tiles as argument.

John,
Have used the Hydrochloric Aid this am. - my outside tiles are glazed, but still mark up very easily, with rust..!!
I used the acid neat from the BRICO bottle ( says 30% on the bottle - assume this is already diluted ) !!!! on kitchen paper towel - this worked in seconds, perhaps a bit too quickly, so may have damaged the glaze a bit - but on old / dull tiles - I do not care !!!!!
So would recommend rubber gloves and a bit more dilution...!!!
Best of luck - but take care...
