St. Genis des Fontaines.
As La Cueva and the Cafe des Artistes are closed until next Saturday, we have tried the two restaurants in St. Genis des Fontaines, during the past few days. There are new owners at the restaurant which used to be called Le Barbizon. They have changed the decor and have a blackboard menu. They have an interesting range of dishes. The tomato and manchega salad was tasty as were the seiches.
We greatly enjoyed our trip to La Tramontane yesterday evening, not expecting to find a restaurant open on a Monday evening. Again new owners and the restaurant was almost full with two parties of families. They specialise in fondues and raclettes but I had a great 'salade de gesiers' and 'magret de canard' in a honey sauce. Set menu is 17 euros.

I had a meal at this new restaurant (former Barbizon) and I wan't impressed. I think my meal was frozen (a la Metro Frozen Food) but this is often found in this area. But, this wasn't good. Maybe it was defrosted too early or maybe too late for defrosting but I'll never return. This was the Carpaccio des Bouef.
I had a main course of Pene with Pesto. The pene tasted good but then I realized that there wasn't any pesto in the dish. Also, the dish itself was part bowl and part plate. It was impossible to use a knife, since it rolls the bowl/plate. It did looked nice though.
Where is the Tramontane restaurant in St.Genis?
There's a good traiteur in St. Genis (route towards Brouilla). We used them for a group a year back and everyone was very happy. The Boules des Picolates with white beans pleased me the most. Not cheap though.

There is only ONE. Others are nearly all very bland imitations! Here's a nice link in English about it:Kathy wrote: I like the sound of a raclette.
Raclette du Valais THE original!

Every time one or the other of my daughters drives down from Switzerland there is always a big heavy well insulated (10 hours in the car with x kilos of fresh open raclette is asking too much!) parcel and a few bottles of "Fendant". At the moment, because we are moving soon, we have only 1 Kg left of this delectable product!

La Tramontane
This little Bar/Restaurant, is a gem. We live in St Genis and this is by far and away the best food in town. Le Carrefour Bar/Restaurant is also excellent. Give the Chef his head and you wont be dissapointed!
As for the 'new' auberge, I've eaten there twice and will be avoiding it in the future.
