Taxe d'habitation
I hear from some friends (in another departement, not the PO) that they do not pay taxes d'habitation IF they are over 60, and IF they are not in residence on 1st January.
Does anyone know if this is true generally?

This is true sometimes and other times no. The age is requirement and the date is always the first of the year but the amount of money you show on your declaration (French Declaration) will depend if you're considered poor or not.
If you're not making a French declaration, I don't think that they're going to give you any break.
