Hi all :)

Australia feels the cold

Plenty of Antarctic ice

thumbelina wrote:There was a programme on television last night which was talking about the Humidex.

It was really interesting. Why isn't it used more widely, Sav, do you know?
The Humidex index seems to be used mainly in Canada & warnings are issued when humidity levels are very high.
This only occurs in extreme situations, which probably explains why its not a widely used system.

Hi all :)

Low temps in Australia

Quote: WIDESPREAD cloud and persistent rainfall has kept temperatures down right across Queensland.
Longreach, in the Central West, received persistent rain from Tuesday evening, dropping the temperatures by about four degrees. The temperature then barely moved yesterday, reaching a maximum of 11 degrees; 12 degrees below the long-term average and the coldest July day in 44 years of records.Isisford, further south, was even colder, getting to just 10 degrees. This was the town's chilliest day since before records began in 1913, almost a century ago.

A partir d'un humidex de 40, on ressent "beaucoup d'inconfort", au dessus de 45 il y a "danger" et au dessus de 54 un coup de chaleur est imminent.
Just south of Barcelona it's at FIFTY ONE!!

Hi all :)

Very low temps in New Zealand

Quote: An extreme cold snap has broken temperature records and produced what are likely to be the country's coldest nights this year.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research said the past few days had seen some of the lowest temperatures on record.

Air temperatures in Taumarunui, in the central North Island, dipped to -6.8C this week, the coldest since records began in 1947.

Hi all

Arctic ice melt in July is the slowest ever

Quote: Never has ice melted so slowly in mid summer as it has this year. Indeed sea ice melt in July 2010 is less than half the melt rate in 2007. It’s far below anything we’ve seen on record.

Hi all :)

Oh dear

Quote: US Government admits satellite temperature readings “degraded.” All data taken offline in shock move. Global warming temperatures may be 10 to 15 degrees too high.

The fault was first detected after a tip off from an anonymous member of the public to climate skeptic blog, Climate Change Fraud (view original article) (August 9, 2010).

Caught in the center of the controversy is the beleaguered taxpayer funded National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA’s Program Coordinator, Chuck Pistis has now confirmed that the fast spreading story on the respected climate skeptic blog is true.

However, NOAA spokesman, Program Coordinator, Chuck Pistis declined to state how long the fault might have gone undetected. Nor would the shaken spokesman engage in speculation as to the damage done to the credibility of a decade’s worth of temperature readings taken from the problematic ‘NOAA-16’ satellite.

Some winters, there is none at all.

We can often have snowfall in October/November, which will then melt.

2006 it snowed in November, and Canigou was covered right through until June the next year.

2008 / 2009 the snow arrived really early (the skiing season started in November that year!)

2009 /2010 the snow arrived late (if I recall correctly) and melted quite late too.

So sorry, BT, no hard and fast rules on as and when Canigou will carry his winter coat.

Hi all :)

Some more information on Satellite temps
No mention in the media over here on this story
But if proven correct, then this could be very big news

Quote: Respected American physicist, Dr Charles R. Anderson has waded into the escalating Satellitegate controversy publishing a damning analysis on his blog.

In a fresh week of revelations when NOAA calls in their lawyers to handle the fallout, Anderson adds further fuel to the fire and fumes against NOAA, one of the four agencies charged with responsibility for collating global climate temperatures. NOAA is now fighting a rearguard legal defense to hold onto some semblance of credibility with growing evidence of systemic global warming data flaws by government climatologists.
NOAA Systemically Excised Data with ‘Poor Interpolations’

Anderson, a successful Materials Physicist with his own laboratory, has looked closely at the evidence uncovered on NOAA. He has been astonished to discover, “Both higher altitudes and higher latitudes have been systematically removed from the measured temperature record with very poor and biased interpolated results taking their place.”

Like other esteemed scientists, Anderson has been quick to spot sinister flaws in official temperatures across northern Lake Michigan as revealed in my earlier articles.

I had proven that the website operated by the Michigan State University had published ridiculously high surface water temperatures widely distributed over the lake many indicating super-boiling conditions. The fear is that these anomalies have been fed across the entire satellite dataset. The satellite that first ignited the fury is NOAA-16. But as we have since learned there are now five key satellites that have become either degraded or seriously comprised.

In his post Satellite Temperature Record Now Unreliable Anderson’s findings corroborate my own that NOAA sought to cover up the “sensor degradation” on their satellite, NOAA-16. The U.S. physicist agrees there may now be thousands of temperatures in the range of 415-604 degrees Fahrenheit automatically fed into computer climate models and contaminating climate models with a substantial warming bias. This may have gone on for a far longer period than the five years originally identified.

Anderson continues, “One has to marvel at either the scientific incompetence this reveals or the completely unethical behavior of NOAA and its paid researchers that is laid open before us.”

The rest of the month had a lot of dry weather, but it was drier this year.

I've just been looking at the statistics for August.

Interestingly, the hottest place was a little area around Toulouse / Montauban / Agen / Auch with temps that reached over 40° and the coldest temp for the month of August (FOUR degrees!!) was recorded at Brive just 150 kms up the motorway!!

(equally, I should say that Brive's hottest temp for August was 38.9°)
