Hi all
More snow anyone
Quote: Now that we have reached the end of the meteorological winter (December-February,) Rutgers University Global Snow Lab numbers (1967-2010) show that the just completed decade (2001-2010) had the snowiest Northern Hemisphere winters on record. The just completed winter was also the second snowiest on record, exceeded only by 1978. Average winter snow extent during the past decade was greater than 45,500,000 km2, beating out the 1960s by about 70,000 km2, and beating out the 1990s by nearly 1,000,000 km2.

Hi all
Well your not going to forget March in a hurry
Plenty of snow in the PO & chilly temps
I've kept some of the posts from that time in the forecast thread, so we can reminisce at a later date
Here are some video's
Argeles sur Mer

Perpignan

Well this March has turned out wetter, colder & had less sunshine than last year.
Only time will tell, if its a guide for the months ahead.

Hi all
If there's a major eruption, then its not only flying that's a problem.
Quote: Besides releasing clouds of ash into the atmosphere that can disrupt visibility and damage airplane engines, eruptions can cool the climate with the reflection of incoming solar radiation from the troposphere by volcanic sulfur-rich ash, which can decrease temperatures significantly for months or years in some cases.
Just such an aerosol effect is believed to have disrupted the Earth's thermal balance during the Laki event, cooling some Northern Hemisphere regions by as much as 1 or more degrees Celsius below the long-term average.

Fantastic video! Saw this also on today's French news.

Now they'll really be able to get more detailed info on how the sun affects our
weather patterns and maybe put together a more accurate %age of causes.
% sun
% moon
% earth's orbital variations
% human activity
% volcanic activity
etc.

Hi all
Getting colder in the Arctic
Quote: A Russian scientist says the Arctic may be getting colder, not warmer, which would hamper the international race to discover new mineral fields.
An Arctic cold snap that began in 1998 could last for years, freezing the northern marine passage and making it impassable without icebreaking ships, said Oleg Pokrovsky of the Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory.

Hi all
Fancy a break in Korea
Quote: The entire Korean Peninsula is shivering with a record-low spring chill ― the midday high temperature for Seoul recorded 7.8 degrees Celsius and 6.7 degrees for Daejoen, 170 kilometers south from the Seoul, Wednesday, the lowest for late April since 1908, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Hi sue & paulsue and paul wrote:I've been reading on the forum about avalanche risk here in the PO, and read this...'Giant waves on coast'.
Exciting, I thought.
Now...I just trekked all the way along from Port Vendres to Le Barcares, but didn't see any giants. What's going on?
The orange alert was due to come into force yesterday, so probably a continuation today
The wind should be starting to ease slightly, but still quite gusty at
UPDATE
Port-Vendres, up to 55km/h later this evening.
GFS 12Z
Perhaps you should have gone yesterday
But probably not wise

The Cannes film festival starts 12May

Hi all
A bit more about Climate
Quote: Nature Magazine, the academic journal that introduced the world to X-rays, DNA double helix, wave nature of particles, pulsars, and more recently the human genome, is set to publish a paper in June that shows atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is responsible for only 5-10% of observed warming on Earth.

Hi all
Some islands are growing
Quote: A NUMBER of Pacific islands previously thought to be losing ground to rising sea levels caused by climate change have actually grown larger, according to scientists.
A study published in this week’s New Scientist magazine has revealed that despite long-held fears that islands in the Pacific Ocean would be washed away in coming decades due to rising sea levels from global warming, the islands are actually responding to the threat by growing larger.
The study of 27 islands by the University of Auckland and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission in Fiji found that over the last 60 years only four of the islands had shrunk, with the others either remaining stable or growing.
In the same period sea levels have risen by 120 millimetres, or 2 millimetres a year.

Hi all
New snow cover record in Sweden
Quote: Summer has been a long time coming for Storlien-Visjövalen ski resort in central Sweden, near the Norwegian border, where the last of the snow only melted away on Wednesday.
The late thaw contributed to the longest continuous period of snow cover in the region for at least 60 years, according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).
Normally, these types of statistics do not extend back beyond 1961, but for the Jämtland resort of Storlien, SMHI has records reaching back to 1951. The SMHI defines a continuous period with snow cover as snow depth of at least 1 cm.
It has been a remarkable snow season in Storlien-Visjövalen. The area received its first snowfall on September 29th last year.

Hi all
Another indicator to the sun's influence on our planet
Quote: The sun's temper ebbs and flows on what scientists had thought was a pretty predictable cycle, but lately our closest star has been acting up.
Typically, a few stormy years would knock out a satellite or two and maybe trip a power grid on Earth. Then a few years of quiet, and then back to the bad behavior. But an extremely long stretch of low activity in recent years has scientists baffled and scrambling for better forecasting models.
An expected minimum of solar activity, between 2008 and 2009, was unusually deep. And while the sun would normally ramp up activity by now, heading into its next cycle, the sun may be on the verge of a weak solar cycle instead, astronomers said at the 216th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Miami last month.
"We're witnessing something unlike anything we've seen in 100 years," said David Hathaway of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
