Sav,

So are you saying that playing tennis helps, because it circulates the vaccine better :?:
Tennis was ok last night, but does not seem like a great idea now
Cake & PG does though :D

My daughter's school have closed 3 out of 4 classes next week. None of those kids are allowed in school, the garderie or the canteen. Sounds like it's getting pretty serious.

http://www.pyrenees-orientales.pref.gouv.fr/

I'm wondering whether the children should have the vaccination. What's the general advice?

I think they should et maintenant, je continue en Français.

It really comes down to personal choice,Santiago...ie whether you believe the patchy protection the vaccine gives outweighs the negligible risk.

The worrries about quality and "not being tried and tested" etc are non-starters. The company I used to work for was one of the four European producers of ordinary flu vaccine, and believe me ,quality control was top-notch in all four, and we had to pass many rigourous safety tests before we were allowed to market each year's vaccine. The time lag for Swine Flu vaccines is no less than the normal jab,the "cocktail" of which changes each year.

I personally would not bother for myself,as I am not in a high risk group, but,as the risk is substantially elevated in young kids,if I had any,I would probably give it to them.

For all you living here and concerned about getting the vaccination soon : I received the bon de vacc for my youngest fella and we all went to the centre in Bompas. They very happily vaccinated all of us , even though we only had the bon for the youngest fella.
There appeared to be others without their bons as well and they were getting vaccinated without any trouble. The kids have had no adverse effect so far (touch wood). Our arms are a bit tender but apart from that, we're grand....

Just an update on the symptoms of the swine flu vaccination : both kids had high temps today, over 39degrees. However, apart from being washed out and tired, they were in good spirits.
On a positive note, they were both in bed tonight for 7.30pm, usually having high jinks until at least 9ish. Thinking of getting them vaccinated every week!! (joke)

There seems to be various shots. My doctor said I should have one type and my wife (younger) will use a different type. Do you know which is best?

Blackduff (hoping to take the shot tomorrow)

Pandemrix is the standard vaccine, but Celvapan if you have an egg allergy etc

Good luck!

Sav is right. Pandremix is the standard. As most vaccines are grown on cultures of egg albumen, one company produces in a different way;hence that is better for those with egg allergies.

Having been out of the industry for several years now,I've lost track but the difference between the various vaccines was thus:

Think of the flu virus as an orange. The "flesh" gives you the antobodies, the "peel" makes you feel bad. In the old days the vaccine was just a case of mashing up the entire thing, flesh and peel. So it gave you the protection ,but made you feel crap as well.

Then,in the 90's my company along with another found a way of "peeling" the virus,so we were able to extract the flesh and chuck away the peel,so you got the antibodies, without feeling so crap.

I think that all standard flu vaccines are now produced in the new way,but I've no idea if this applies to H1 N1 vaccines as well.

Hope this helps.

The Glaxo Smith Kline shots had a serious problem in Canada this week. Not more about this-I just noted the name.

For the two types of shots, there's one with Adjuvant and the other has without Adjuvant. This word is in French and it seems in English too. Basically this is a catalyst, giving a quicker response to the medicine. I use a blood thinner so I cannot use the "with Adjuvant".

One more point. In Peter's page there's a post from Alex Hampshire. He had his shot today and he will have to get a second shot in a few weeks. Has anyone knows of a two barrel drug for the pig flu shot. I'm going to take the shot on Monday if they're open. Hard to tell since they don't have any telephone service.
