That's right Opas - we are allowed to recommend her to one another but she is not allowed to recommend herself publicly - and certainly not allowed to pay any money for any form of advertising. (which is fine because the directory is free) I have put her in the directory here, http://www.anglophone-direct.com/-Doctors-dentists-? along with your recommendations Jonathan and Denise so thanks for those. Any other recommendations welcome.

RF.
It doesn't matter what language(s) you speak. Try taking my 2 year old to the doctors. It will be good test of your language abilities under pressure. She screams at a pitch designed to cause pain and deafening.

If you truly are keen to help, please post your phone number and we'll call you next time as she is due an injection :) Or did I get it wrong and it's you that asks your neighbor :)

By the way. We had some guests last week who are working here on a 4 year project to buy military helicopters from the French Govt. The couple don't speak very good French. The project lingua franca is English therefore it's not necessary. I assume your tongue was firmly in your cheek when you suggested that their sort should be denied local health care.

Dr Huw Casson and Dr Judith Casson are native English speakers who have a practice in 31520 Ramonville St Agne, near Toulouse . In addition to normal services, they offer a 24/7 telephone service with regard to anyone in intensive care or have been bereaved in South West France who wishes, or whose relatives wish for assistance in English. This service is entriely free.

I have lived in France since 2002 and previously worked in Monaco and Brussels so my french, though not fluent, is quite good enough for such things as dealing with utility companies, the tax office, and also my doctor. However, he insisted on speaking very bad English to me, as he wanted to practise but I just replied in french. I do look up any medical words in my dictionary before I go, just to avoid confusion, but arthrose is easy enough to understand.
That was in Lot, so I am looking for any good doctor (a woman would be nice) around St. Cyprien, for when I move there in December.

Can anyone recommend a woman doctor within reach of St. Cyprien - no need to be English speaking.

According to the link given by vieux hibou the practice has now closed. What a shame! During my last visit to France in October I suffered severe pains similar to a heart attack. I did not seek medical assistance as I was worried about my inability to converse in French. I pretended to my hubby it wasn't as bad as it was, we also were flying home two days later. Fortunately after a week in hospital in England and an angiogram it turned out to be a heart spasm. (same symptoms). If I had had anyone to translate for me I would have contacted emergency services. Needless to say I was severly reprimanded by the doctors here and do realise how foolish I was.

My husband & I are just going through the process of registering on the French healthcare system. Can anyone recommend a good doctor in the Prades/Vinca/Ille-sur-Tet area? Preferably English speaking, but not essential. Thanks

Tanya, there is a fairly large practice in Prades, where you can just turn up and see anyone who is on duty at the time. If you like, I can send you the details, times etc.

Thanks Tiffany - I think know the one you mean (it has a vets on the side too?). If you could send me the details anyway that would be much appreciated. Taniya

Mr Peyras the dentist referred to previously speaks a little english and is very goo.

Dr Sautai on Argeles Plage near to Ecomarche speaks excellent English and seems to be an excellent doctor.

- Dentists: re. Dr Gade (Elne).
did a crown for my husband (knocked off a tooth eating sausage meat a day or so after we had moved to France). I personally found the work to be wanting - colour does not match other teeth, contrary to work I had done in the UK (both of which we had to pay something for).
but, yes, he speaks English and is pleasant.

- Orthopedic Surgeon - Dr Mouttet (Medipole, Cabestany).
Work done very well (hip replacement).
Be prepared for 'dépassement d'honoraires' - i.e. partly refunded amount if you have a mutuelle that covers this.
Some somewhat authoritarian staff, and not very forthcoming as regards information. There was a need to insist so as to get information - Staff do their job, but do not venture any info.
btw, bring your kettle if you want (good) tea - should you be spending some time as an in-patient.
Dr Mouttet speaks English (spends time in the States, from what I seem to remember). ,

Chantal -:)

Dr Mouttet did Paul's hip too. He was excellent, and all the costs were picked up by CPAM + SwissLife complémentaire (altho we have since changed to Generali complémentaire for a reason totally unconnected with the good service we got from SwissLife)

Tiffany,

You need to upload it to an image hosting site like 'photobucket' or 'image shack' first.

If you are struggling, you could email it to me and I will do it for you.

Does anyone know of a website in France where one can check a doctor's treatment record. I am close to having a hip prosthesis and am very interested in the question of the ability, the number of operations performed per year and the success rate of my soon-to-be specialist.

It is very easy to get this info from the web in UK. It's now almost a case of if they are not on the web there's a reason they're not there. I can't find any similar info on French medical websites. Like most French sites, they give you the info they want you to see but are very coy about giving away anything else !

I am a bit concerned that if I ask the doctor directly I might get a flea in my ear as well as a hip prosthesis.

All advice welcome except from insane members.

I have no way of convincing you of my sanity, in fact I doubt it personally.

But P had a hip replacement by Dr Mouttet in Perpignan(Medipole, Cabestany) about 4 years ago and has sailed through what can only be called a pleasurable experience. Strange but true!

I know a member of this forum who has had the op at Prades, and can also speak highly of his experience - I forget the name of his surgeon, sorry.

I guess it all depends on so many things, not least your reason for needing the replacement, and especially your level of fitness/other health issues.

I know this isn't what you are asking for, and I don't know how to find a so-called league table of surgeons' success, but then I'm just a dotty old forum-bat

Sue

Thanks for the advice. Dr Mouttet is also highly recommended from several other sources, professional and otherwise. I am probably asking the impossible for info on individual performance at the moment but I'll try professional association sites and see whether I can give them a nudge.

Best wishes

Mike.
