Doctors, dentists.......

Post by Kate »

If you happen to know of an English speaking doctor, dentist, nurses..... - anyone in the 'caring' professions, please let me know and I will put them in our directory. This is a free service for those professions. For people who do not speak the language fluently, it does make a big difference, particularly when one is not well, to be able to deal with somebody who can communicate in English. Merci d'avance
Kate
PS If you can supply details (name, address, tel, e mail, speciality.... that would be particularly useful)

I' not menopausal, nor do I have frozen shoulder - but I do admit to an occasional heartache!

PS I think I may change my avatar again soon - I'm not really the lone ranger-crusader type!

Peyras and Villarem dentists are in Argeles, on the Carrefour estate, and have just moved into spanking new practice with super car park. Dr Villarem speaks some English.

Just like all dentists, he does it while you've got your mouth jammed full of metalwork!!

Also for those who need a new hip or similar, Dr Mouttet, Espace Mediterraneenne, Perpignan speaks good English. and does hips!!

I hope you do not mind me asking this question,Sue and Paul, but when Dr Mouttet did Pauls hip,how did the finances work(particularly as you had only just arrived here)? Was it a cash job, paid for by insurance(Fr or GB),or sorted by the GB NHS,via the CPAM?

Purely for info, you understand.I hope I'll not be needing him (or any of his colleagues)some time soon, but forewarned is forearmed (or should I say forehipped...ha ha ha).

It's OK to ask. We have burrowed our way into CPAM/Perpignan's darkest tunnels, got our Carte Vitale sorted out, got a Mutuelle (SwissLife), a GP, a dentist, a hernia surgeon (Paul, not Sue!) and a bank account!!! So far repayments are coming in. There was no upfront payment for the hernia op, Dr Devaux, Medipole (a bit of English, very nice young man). The hip(h)op is in October, but Swisslife say just tell them a month in advance of the date, and they will do the necessary with CPAM, who seem to say the same thing - they even have us on their system as being Swisslife customers. One can only hope for the best. Oh, and we have also got out European Health Cards, for when we visit the UK. Some of our success is down to initial advice on this forum, so give yourselves a pat on the back!! Franchement, I'm amazed at how far we have got, we only moved here in April, as you know! :D Sue

For Sue and Paul - and anyone else who needs to know:
OK - here's how to shrink your photos

You must have Microsoft Photodraw to be able to do it this way.

- display the photo you want
- click on it using the right mouse button
- click on open with (or ouvrir avec if you have the French version as I do)
- click on file (or fichier)
- click on save for (or enregistrer pour)
- click on on the web (or sur le web) then next (suivant)
- click on as miniature (comme miniature) then next (suivant)
you will now be presented with 3 miniatures of your picture at different densities
- normally, click on the central one of the 3 then next (suivant)
you will now be presented with a panel showing the characteristics of the picture you will save
a) if it is within the max limits described in the profile
- click save (enregistrer)
b) if it is not within the max limits described in the profile click on back (précédent), then repeat as in a) above after clicking on the right one of the 3 pictures
you will be presented with a panel with my pictures (mes images)
scroll until you find the registry you want to file it under, then click on save (enregistrer)

You can now go back to the profile and get your picture from the hard disk as described in the instruction there.

Hope this is OK - happy shrinking!!

(VH if you want to transfer this to another new thread with Sue and Paul's question above, no problem!)

We're doing v nicely thanks. There is a lot to do in/out of our house, and we're natural-born sloths. But as the garden won't wait, and we need to impress our many visitors, we're getting on with it nicely. Mr "volet" came this morning to quote us for new shutters all round - we may go silent if taken by shock in the next 48 hours - devis-promise-time!

We did already know the area before buying, but have a lot to learn and find out. Paul wants to learn French, but as I've not managed to teach him any in my 33 odd years since qualifying/ marrying him, I think we need outside help. Any offers. He doesn't do grammar! :? Sue

From early September you could try the Association France/Grande Bretagne - Pyrénées Orientales - see under Meeting Ground.

I shall probably receive the programme for this autumn in the next weeks.

However, perhaps it's a bit far to come to Perpignan just for that??

Sue...Steve my hubby started his french with Michel Thomas CD's and has progressed very well and at the moment doing an Open University course and speaks good French (compared to me) and now doing written french.

I must admit I haven't got the willpower like him but I have started on the CD's and I am finding them very good and easy to follow, may be worth a try before joining in on any lessons in a group, altho this will be useful as you progress further.

Good Luck.

Should be in the "back office" thingy with excel, word, powerpoint, front page, publisher etc. This was standard with windows ME - but I think most XP versions except the professional ones may cater only for multimedia and not have the back office stuff.

If you click on startup then programmes and it's not listed then you would have to get it from somewhere. Alterntively, if you have photoshop or some other photo manipulative software it may have the same capability - but I wouldn't know about that.. sorry

Maybe VH could shift all this into another thread called "Things you can do with Bill"? ... unless one is callked Lewinsky, of course!!

Hi

sorry to go back to the original question !

Kate and moderators should read this : http://the-languedoc-page.com/phpBB2/vi ... ht=dentist

I haven't followed it up. I've had similar questions before over the years.

Anyone know more ?

English speaking doctor in Thuir

Post by Santiago »

I have a French doctor in Thuir who speaks perfect English

His name is Dr Fabre
Hours
Mon 3-7
Tue 9-1 & 3-7
Wed 3-7
Friday 3-7
Saturday (maynot be him) 10-12

For some reason I can't find his phone number but if you know Thuir then he can be found by walking down the lane where there are two butchers at the end opposite each other - turn left and walk down the street that the Fish shop is located on and he is about 30 metres down on your left.

Unfortunately it is the waiting room scenario where you have to wait your turn and he appears very popular!

There is also another english speaking french doctor (Women) in Thuir but I have not been to her.

Santiago, do you mean there is a lady English speaking doctor in the same practice as your one? as the place you describe sounds like the same building(glass fronted ) as my employer......she speaks excelent English, I do mean to ask if I can publicise her on here, maybe I will remember tomorrow.

I think she is in a different practice in Thuir ie different building!

I have never meet the women you are talking about - maybe she does different hours to Dr Fabre (who my wife calls Dr Fab!) and she has a few times with our daughter.

Nearly all the "specialistes" I've had cause to encounter over the last year have spoken excellent English.

Not so,the generalistes. We visited the one Kate mentions in Ceret(Dr Haufmann) last week while ours was on hols, and she assured me she does NOT speak much English.

It would seem normal that patients should be able to express themselves in French rather than to expect a French doctor to consult in English. However, there's always a good French friend who will willingly accompany a forlorn British expat to the surgery. That's what I do, when the opportunity arises…

I have asked today, marie prieu-sicart 8 bd Marceau Thuir. If you find the water fountain (if you come from the market place, up the little road past the pharmacy) you will see a fresh fish shop, , as you look at the fish shop , take the road it is on and turn left and follow it untill you find a glass fronted office........

She really does speak excelent English(even though she says she doesn't) I have discussed in depth my daughters very rare syndrome with her in English (i did not learn anything more than I had already done in French with my own medicin traitant) but it was nice to know that I hadn't missed anything in the translation!

I didn't realise that doctors are not allowed to advertise thir own services, she mentioned it today when I asked if I could put her name to the site, she said i could do it but SHE could not!

RF.
I'd agree with you with regard to those of us who've chosen to live here,Robert.

The problem lies usually with tourists in the area who fall ill,and maybe are not as well versed and confident in French as those of us who are permanent.

I know my Doc in Ceret has had many visits this summer from Brit tourists, who've found him on this site. He's certainly not complaining as he makes a Euro or three pin money from these "extra" consultations.
