Port Vendres and Beyond traveller ideas

Post by heldrew »

Hi.
I am new to this forum and would like advice.
I am travelling through France and will be staying in Port Vendres for about 6 weeks from the end of Oct to early Dec. I have three kids aged 13,11 and 7. Any suggestions on 2-3 day excursions or day trips would be great.
Also any local events on during that time would be helpful.
We will have a car.
Thanks

Hi heldrew, If you and NZ kids are keen on rugby then find your way to Cafe Sola in Collioure. Le patron is mad keen on rugby and Dan Carter is a sort of god in this great little village. Kids will like the french frogman running around the town - dont mention Auckland and Rainbow Warrior in the same sentence though.
Lots of events - most will be promoted on this site

Hi Heldrew and welcome.

Here are a few things which might be fun 'en famille'

http://www.anglophone-direct.com/Le-petit-train-jaune

and as Patrick says, there will be plenty of events published on the site as the time approaches.

Have a great time

Hi Heldrew

Why not take the coastal road from PV to Figueres and visit Teatre Museu Dali? The children will be fascinated. There is also the Museu del Joquet de Catalunya (Toy Museum of Catalonia), Spain's largest and oldest toy museum.

Infact, you might leave the car at Figueres and take the train to Barcelona for a couple of days. Again the children will love the Gaudi buildings.

Another trip might be to Carcassone, especially if they read in advance something about the Cathars. You could combine this with a trip to one or more of Les Cinq Fils de Carcassonne: The Cathar Castles - some of the most dramatic castles in the world. This might also be combined with a boat trip on the Canal du Midi.

Another idea (bit far for a day trip though) would be the Porto Aventura park near Tarragona in Spain.

The French-language pages at Port-Vendres.com have each month's programme of events, though obviously they are fewer, and more oriented to locals, at this time of year (but thanks for motivating me to look - there is a talk I would like to catch about cross-border traffic in WW2).
