Gender roles die hard

I was in my local supermarket today and a couple of prosperous-looking 70-ish Parisians (they were using Monoprix bags) were stocking up for their holiday. They had neglected to weigh their bag of vegetables. The husband hurried off to do it: on his return, he said to his partner, in an interrogative tone, "that is an aubergine, isn't it?".
