I would have thought, as in most countries, people get a set number of public days off per year. If that public holiday falls on a non-working day, they get a day off before or after. As Montgolfier says, le pont is not a freebie (althought it maybe for fonctionnaires).

If a bank holiday falls on a day you do not normally work then you are not paid for it ( and do not get another day in exchange). If you are temping you have to work the day before and the day after to be entitled to be paid for it. If you work that day you are entitled to be paid double. Have worked for many companies and temping agencies over the years and unless you have a really generous boss then these are the rules. those who have compagnies who do 'le pont' have to catch up that day at some point, they do not get a freebie. Some use there overtime for this and others work an extra day the week before (my sons company for example).
