Strange that four or five fires broke out quite close to each other on one day when the weather hasn't been super-hot and dry for weeks ...Though they are saying that one started as a result of debroussaillage operations.

It looks like there could be another fire on the other side of the Alberes behind Carrefour/Intermarche. There is certainly a lot of smoke and sirens.

We seem to be running two parallel threads on this, and repeating ourselves. Can they be merged?

Thread "Fire at Le Perthus"

Just seen another massive pall of smoke rise behind Neolous. I found this site which shows the extent of the burnt area on google maps. hope the link works

and a bit more from L'Independant

The fire apparently started near Fort Bellegarde in Perthus & then quickly spread due to the Tramontane
Ironically i posted a picture of the house in the Pannissars area (weather forecast thread)
Which you can see in the video

fires at the border

Post by mand »

We went to Spain yesterday, took visitors for a day out to Tossa, We left Tossa At 5pm as we approached Figures the sky was thick with smoke, We were stuck on the N11 moving very slowly or sometimes not moving at all the police diverted us off the road saying the Perthus was closed we spent the next 9 hours trying to get out of spain firstly heading for port-bou again being diverted back to Figueres...all the police kept saying was there was no way over the border and to go back to Figueres and sleep the night there....we eventually got home via prats de mollo but but it took us 11 hours to do so.

There's fairly thick smoke coming up from behind Le Perthus again. Just got back from Saint Jean and it looked as bad as yesterday. Hope it's just an aftermath and hasnt started up again. It's a beautiful day here today, but still windy enough to spread a fire I think?

Received by e mail

We were caught up in it and only managed to get home by driving back to Junction 5 and taking the Banyoles to Prats de Mollo road. All together it took us 7 hours to get from Tossa de Mar to Ceret.

It was a terrifying experience with ash falling on us and nowhere to go to get away from it. At Figueras the police told us to go as far back as Barcelona as they had no idea where the fire would hit next!

Anyone living in the Albères will have noticed the constant shuttle of Canadairs in pairs going in that direction this morning. Hope it's not bad again, and they are just damping everything down

How often do fires occur? I see someone mentioned an alarm/siren, how does this work? Etc etc :) thanks in advance:)
