Snow Leopard for mac

Before I connect my new printer/scanner I thought it might be the right time to instal Snow Leopard.
I've had the disc since last October would you believe.
Just been too scared to change over - stories of losing all sorts of stuff.
Truth is I'm not too sure which things I should be backing up - is it just all my folders?
Could I possibly lose my contact lists on facebook and yahoo?
I have an external 80gig hard drive (from when I had my old iMac and began to run out of space) and I thought of saving a copy of all my folders to that.
Is that the right idea?
I'm on mac OS X 10.5.8 at the moment if that means anything to someone out there.
Feeling brave now - think I will think about opening the case.
Someone give me some encouragement por favor.

That must have gone smoother than installing Windoze!

Russell.

Even an idiot could have done it.
Hang on, an idiot DID do it.
The only problem came when the screen told me it was installing and would be 45 minutes so I went downstairs.
Came back to see a message on the screen asking me to allow something to connect with something and the whole process was waiting for me to press ALLOW.
So I had to wait another 45 minutes.
The only difference I can see so far is that everything happens sooooo quickly.
In fact it has probably submitted this post already!

Phew! Too late to advise that you have everything backed up elsewhere before installing a new operating system, but all seems well.

Yes. Thanks for worrying about me!
The only problem is that I have slowed down a bit and the computer has sped (speeded? spode? spidden?) up.
Now have to sort out how to use this new printer.

No wonder it is so fast. I have just read that the Finder has been completely rewritten in cocoa.

But surely the cocoa would slow it down?
It certainly used to help mother-in-law get to sleep.

Sorry to have missed your transition to Snow Leopard... has it continued to go well? I am considering making the leap.....

Yep. It's fine. Really fast. I didn't lose any stuff at all.
Spent ages backing things up just in case but it proved unnecessary.
I had the Snowleopard disk for at least 9 months before I dared to use it!
It always seemed the wrong time should there be a problem.Good luck if and when you pluck up the courage.

Oh bugger! I have just installed Snow Leopard and find there is no printer driver available for my Lexmark Z515 here in Baho. For just about every other Lexmark in the known universe, yes, but not for the Z515.

I had terrible trouble trying to get my new Epson Photo PX650 to talk to my mac on Snow Leopard.
Tried all sorts of things and asked on the mac forum.
It worked eventually.
Keep trying. Sure there's a solution somewhere.

The solution may be to get a Brother laser printer. Brother I think is good with Macs and a laser would resolve the other problem (the one I was trying to fix when I discovered my Lexmark doesn't support Mac OS 10.6) of the ink jets drying out while we aren't here.

Or I'll just use an internet cafe for printing our return boarding passes which is about all I use a printer for here. Cheaper that way!

Well - I eventually did it. Upgraded to Snow Leopard - no problems & it's pretty damn good.

What swayed me was the requirement for Snow Leopard to access the new Mac App Store... well worth the effort. You can upload Aperture 3 there for £44.99, rather than £180 for the CD's! I can highly recommend it if you are a Mac user. :D

What advantage does Aperture 3 have over Picasa (for organising photos) and The Gimp (for editing them)? Both are free.

Russell.

It's the name of the most recent Mac operating system. 10.6.6 at the moment

Marguerite & Steve - Snow Leopard is the name given to the newest Mac Operating System (OS) - OS X 10.6. If you click on the Apple symbol in the top left of your screen, then click on 'About This Mac', you will get a box telling which OS you currently run on. You don't have to upgrade - I just decided to in order to get access to the Mac App Store, where you can download software rather than ordering it in boxed CD format.

Russell - I'm afraid I can't help you with your questions, as I have never used Picasa or The Gimp. One of the main reasons I like Aperture (& iPhoto before that) is that it is an Apple product & therefore perfectly compatible with all the other software that I use for our web site (iWeb) and films (iMovie). It is also an extremely powerful photo editing suite - on a par with Photoshop Elements in my (non-professional) opinion.

An example of what you can produce with iWeb in the comfort of your own home is our own web site:

That's OK. You have Snow Leopard, but just not the very latest update. If you click on 'Software Update', also under the Apple Symbol your system will check for the latest updates. But you don't really need to even bother with that unless you really feel the need to have the latest version...

Bit of disagreement here! I think it is well worth keeping up with all updates. Updates are provided for a purpose - often to fix glitches and problems in the programme which have been discovered by users. If you don't update you still have the glitches and the problems. Updating costs nothing and you should be prompted automatically when new updates are available. Is this prompt not happening?

Colin - I agree with you entirely. It's just that some people don't feel confident downloading updates if they are not into their computers - easy though it is, particularly with Mac. I should have elaborated in my earlier post.

Yes it should be so easy on the Max. Automatic software update window pops up, click the button and it is done - usually with an automatic restart. For all I know, it is just as easy on a PC!

Marguerite - is this not happening on yours?
