http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8520980.stm

found guilty of a massive scam to sell 18 million

From reading this and other reports it seems Gallo were happy with what they got and so were the US purchasers of Red Bicycle. Perhaps it's more of a tax issue.

The French middlemen got caught by the French authorities but as Graham says, Gallo comes out looking like they were innocent, even though they were paying way below the market rate for bulk Pinot.

The press are having a bit of a field day.

Here are 2 interesting points.

In the US, a wine labelled Pinot noir only needs to contain 75% Pinot noir.

The wine won awards in several US Pinot noir competitions.

I think the people who are going to suffer are those making of selling any wine labelled as French Pinot in the US or the UK. So even though the French authorities stepped in to protect their reputation, by making public something that has been going on for 4 years without any complaints from the importer or their US consumers, they had the opposite effect.
