Wine Tasting in Perpignan Streets

When in the PO last year we 'fell' over a wine producers event in Perpignan where you buy a glass and go around the stalls tasting and chatting about the wines, I think it may have been the first pressing.

I'd love to do the same this year, anyone know when the event takes place?

I missed this last year as was still busy fermenting and pressing wines.

I suspect they are wines from last years vintage. Are there really any current vintage wines on offer? I couldn't imagine having anything ready for public consumption by the middle of October.

Maybe it's like Beaujolais Nouveau - Roussillon Nouveau????
Why in fact, is it acceptable to drink Beaujolais young but not others?

If the event is called 'vins primeurs' then I believe this is meant to promote this season's wines (same kind of event as for Beaujolais nouveau).

Grape picking is well under way and a lot of producers will bottle 'in-house' thus keeping delays to a minimum.

It sounds as though it is the first of all the Primeur wine fairs in France

Personally, I don't think it's acceptable to drink any wine that young. It's just a marketing gimmick and rather ill-advised. Beaujolais is hardly a region to look up to. It's great to celebrate the end of harvest but why not have proper wines to taste, rather than rush-jobs. :?:

Beaujolais nouveau....always reminds me of Del boy in only fools and horses,.....................I will have the beaujolais nouveau and make it a vintage one.Not many wine producers down here do a en primeur,I was handed a bottle from a bio wine producer in fourques a couple of years ago which was really nice wine,thin but with lots of flavor.

I'd heartily agree with you re "primeur wines",Santiago.

They are a gimmick.I've never tasted one I've liked.To be quite frank I think I'd rather have the unfermented grape juice as a tipple!

What are you lot like!! Ok the wines might be a bit fresh, light, whatever, but a lot of the producers did advise letting the wine age.

It was a lovely atmosphere, generous glugs of wine, unlike the thimbleful i've had at local 'degustations'.

Agree prob no vintage for sale, but for quoffing (especially the amounts my mates drink) quite palatable!! :)

I'm intrigued enough to go along for the party. And I might even try some of this fast-food style wine. I'm beginning to see the attraction of it...

But seriously, don't even think about aging any of those wines. Have you ever tasted a Beaujolais nouveau after a couple of years in bottle - yeugh!

I suppose these events are publicity stunts,and that's fair enough,but there is so much nice,saleable quality wine produced round here,I'd have thought the producers would want to showcase/give away samples of that ,rather than a thin characterless nouveau plonk?

I'm going to drag this thread out of the depths because I'm being invited to join a number of "promotional tastings" around the region.

The idea is that wine makers turn up to various fairs and events organised for tourists/holiday makers and hand out free tastings. The tourism board charges the punters €2 and keeps the money for their own expenses.

I object to this kind of thing, not just because I devote all my time, energy and money to making wine but because when you give away anything for free, it devalues it.

The Perpignan fete des vins is a prime example. Can you imagine a €2 drink-as-much-as-you-can event in Champagne, Napa Valley or New Zealand? The Marlborough Wine Fair costs $40 to get in and each tasting of food or wine is additional. It sells out every year and is sponsored by BMW.

I know people like free booze but does anyone really think this is a good way to raise awareness of the quality of Roussillon wines?

Hmm, fair point, but then again you do get exposure and maybe some new and loyal "followers".
Also , as your vineyard story is an interesting one and a stall where all the ex pats/ anglophone tourists will be able to chat to you , I think you would stand out from the crowd.
Might make for cheap PR/advertising for a finish?

We had a meal at The Salamandre in Sorede and unbeknown to us a local vigneron was promoting his wines. We had free tasting all evening. We had three different wines offered with each course. We liked two of his wines and did buy some bottles before we left, we also took a business card for a future visit. It was a lovely surprise and we would not have known about his vinyard had he not been there. Some people were being greedy and drinking lots, I felt this was innapropriate but most people were sensible. So I think it is a good way to promote your produce. I know in a restaurant is on a smaller scale but word will get round.
