Can anyone recommend a garden centre around the Ceret area, thanks!

There is a small one between Ceret and St Jean Plat de Courts but they only have a small selection. There is also one at Reynes but I haven't been to that one yet.

So far I have used Jardi 66 at Argeles-sur-mer. (If you want directions I can give you them) On that site there are 3 garden centres. One specialises in drought plants mainly Cacti and the other two have a wide variety. I usually get what I need at these although they are slightly more expensive than the Garden Centres in Spain.

Great, thanks Kathy, I don't need a lot, just a few speciment plants and am very excited to see what kind of plants they stock, probably all the ones I am desperate to get in the UK but never can!! Everyone has gone garden centre crazy over here with the good weather but the prices have really shot up this year, I seem to go to one every weekend.

You mentioned Spain in your posting, can you let me know if there are any you know of around Figueres etc?

If you are prepared to make the trip to Argeles (as suggested above) then I strongly recommend Crozet at Corneilla del Vercol. You can't miss it, it's on the D114 sandwiched between the dual carriageway and the railway. Not particularly cheap but the next best thing to a visit to the JDP at Montpellier.

Tip: If you go via the "Auchan roundabout" you drive past the Nissan shop. On that roundabout, just before Nissan, if you take the left instead of carrying on to the Jardiland, you drive down a short road - Nissan is on the right - BUT on the left is the entrance to the parking of

The boutique is definitely worth a visit for interior art/deco and nice scented things! The resto has a good reputation, though we never ate there. Otherwise you can try the Buffalo Grill near Jardiland. The new Conforama is also in that complex too as well, of course, as the mega cinema.

Combine the two for an interesting shopping!!

Mas Gource in Ceret (as you're coming out towards Maureillas, opposite the turning for the hauts de Ceret) has everything you need for the garden AND they promised to give 10% off to anyone who says they got their details from anglophone-direct. Of course, this was in 2005, fand I haven't seen them since, so things may have changed a little!! Ask for Daniel or Marie, both of whom speak good English.

Brilliant thanks everyone! I just cannot wait to get over there I am so excited!! I can spend a whole week just going round garden centres! And why I hear you ask does she need plants since her house is no more than a hovel? Well its actually taking shape now, and I thought that planting ahead would be wise so when we come to do the garden, we have actually got something nice to sit in! I am coming armed with my 'drought resistent' plants guide and Steve knows nothing of this yet.

The one I have been to in Figueras is on the main road driving out towards Spain. Reasonable prices but smallish selection. I have been to a really good one as you are coming out of Roses left hand side after the place that sells fairground type models. They have a big gorilla on show I think. (This on the opposite side of the road)That was quite cheap and I got a lot of plants for my money. They were really helpful just like the guy at Jardi 66. He looked something up on the internet as we were struggling to convey our meaning in French. Because of him I do go there as he deserves custom when he is interested enough to go the extra mile. I also have a loyalty card and after so many purchases you get discount.

as you drive from Ceret heading up the Vallespir valley, there's a garden centre just off the first roundabout outside Ceret.

Take the first right (between the car showroom and Lidls) and about 200 metres down that road there's a lane to the left which leads to a garden centre.

Can't remember what's it called - and have only been there just once. But the staff were helpful and there seemed to be a good range of plants available. What struck me more than anything though was their knowledge of the different climactic conditions in the area i.e. when hearing my flat was in Amelie he said that there were plants that would do less well there than in Ceret as the night air was colder during winter! And in Coustouges I'd guess you will have even greater extremes....

The two we use in the Figueras area are on the Fig -Roses main dual carriageway. On the right is Merca Jardi,and just before it on the left is another,slightly bigger place I've just forgotten the name of. But you can't miss it! Both of these places are good quality and keenly priced.

If you can be bothered to go that far on the Figueras side of L'Escala is another place on the left as you go in. Absolutely HUGE selection,but a notch up price-wise from the other two.

Don't know why I couldn't remember it - the signage is really obvious at the roundabout and I've seen the name every time I've driven past!
