covering walls
Hi
Can anyone advise me how to cover (paint) the walls that seem to be covered with a rough spray on paint - a bit like artex. I have tried to sand it, but it is messy and time consuming. I ws wondering if there is a preparation to cover it to make it smooth so that we can then paint it.
Thanks if anyone has advice.

In UK you would skim the walls but dont think you can buyskimt out here so it would have to be replastered but the plaster over here like the paint is pretty dire. I assume you are talking about walls that have been crepied and therefore outside walls. If they are inside walls you could plasterboard them.

In my limited of experience of DIY in France I have found that the problem with the various plaster finishes available is that there are so many grades. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the quality. You just have to know how to use them.
If you have a reasonable command of French I suggest you have a word with one of the technical assistance guys in Leroy Merlin. They've pointed me in the right direction a couple of times. In one case recommending a specialist shop rather than fob me off with something that was not really the right kit for the job.

The previous owners of my house covered the walls with Artex and I have been slowly removing it.
In the UK there is a product called PolyTex which is like a thick paint that supposedly gives a smooth finish.
All professionals that I have spoken to dismiss it as useless and say the only way is to sand it down and then skim it with plaster.
Leroy Merlin sell a device called a Giraffe which is an electric sander with a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the dust.
The alternative does seem to be plasterboard. Tradesmen in France seem to prefer this to plaster.

Crepied walls
Cant you just paint the crepied walls? Assuming they are inside walls the crepi shouldnt be too rough. Most of our walls are crepied and I painted the kitchen, bathroom and loo with white emulsion. It wasn't as easy as painting smooth walls. I found after painting the walls they became a bit smoother.
I'm no Barry Bucknell (showing my age there!) but it can be done. The other option is to wallpaper over the crepi with a heavy wallpaper, then paint it. This has been done sucessfully on one of our walls where there was a crack.
