Le Chaudron Magique, Céret

Céret has traditionally been well served by restaurants. The classy newcomer, Le Chaudron Magique, just a short stroll down Rue St Ferréol from the heart of the town, is a really mouth-watering addition. Don’t be put off by the rather daunting entrance corridor. Within yards, you’ll be in a very welcoming and stylish space - and not much further to an unexpected outdoor garden area. Some good photos on the website will prepare you for that. If the ambiance is something of a revelation, the meal will be even more of an eye-opener. Stephan will welcome you and his partner Cathy will work her magic in the kitchen. From the three-course 14.95-euro weekday lunch menu (glass of wine and coffee included) to the top of the range 25-euro offering, you’ll find an embarras de richesse. On four occasions, we’ve taken the slightest excuse to take friends along there and without exception, they’ve been impressed. And been grateful that we led them down that garden path, well that entrance corridor.

miammm. I've been to the link and it sounds lovely. Is it where the restaurant 'Escapade' used to be? Had some very dodgy oysters there a few years ago - details in private on request  can't now remember why I was even tempted by oysters, as I always avoid them. Must have been bravado.

Decided to give this place a try today.

What a treat!!!!

Lovely surroundings, friendly host and an interesting menu!

Aperos were accompanied by the most delicious olives - prepared in house.

We were seven - six of us had starters - three terrine forestier and two roquefort and pear souffles served with a salad with walnuts and walnut dressing, the other was a salmon and confit tomato souffle served with salad and pine nuts with a mint dressing. All absolutely scrummy

For the main course, we had entrecote and chips (hand cut, proper chips and stacked beautifully!) with a forestier sauce, two delicious cassoulets with sausage and confit - one magret with a banyuls sauce and three joue de boeuf macerated in muscat and served with three different pastas. The beef just melted, literally, in the mouth!

For the desserts, rice pud, tarte tatins and a fabulous cheese (four different cheeses with three different home made accompaniments - fig jam, apricot jam and honey) and the piece de la resistance on the dessert front was pear nems served with a hot chocolate sauce - complete with chopsticks!

Two very acceptable bottles of cotes du roussillon red and four cokes, five coffees and the bill was 210€.

My only very slight criticism was the speed of service but this really was only a minor point!

I can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant and, indeed, can't WAIT to go back!

Be aware that on the themed nights or specials you are not able to have anything from the a la carte menu. We went on Easter Monday where they had a set menu with one starter, a choice of two mains and desserts and a cheese platter. Fortunately we enjoyed the set menu.
