... and when?

Xmas eve, Xmas lunch, Xmas dinner? Turkey with the full catastrophe? Or what? Or just mac and cheese, which would be nourishing and rational. My own family tradition is a sort of endlessly extended "high tea" on Xmas day. I think it was once meant to be lunch, but tended to slip over the years. It works for us.

Pintade at about 3.30pm on the 25th. A tradition( the time not the pintade) carried on since childhood when we all had to listen to the Queen's speech! Now it's just a convenient time for us all ..............

I used to work in a basic-but-respectable pub in my university vacations - the sort of place where the regulars had to send in a sick-note if they didn't turn up. Xmas lunchtime was the busiest shift of the year, and a perennial conflict between hope and experience: wives wanted dinner on the table at 1300, and their husbands never left the pub before 1415 (and even then reluctantly). One year there was a wonderful scene: outraged wife bangs the doors open with a plate in her hand, marches up to her husband at the bar, and declares "if you like it better here than dinner with your family, here it is". And then smashed it down on the bar: broken crockery and sprouts everywhere. The guy was notably subdued for some weeks.

I have the mother in law coming round to make christmas lunch chez moi for all the French side of the family. Don't think she trusts me to do it myself. At first I was vaguely offended, but then I thought hey....if she wants to do all the work why not? So, we'll be starting off with loads of home made amuse gueules, foie gras etc, then gambas, lobster and oysters, followed by big bird, garnis, salad, cheese, dessert.... Too much for me. Might just go and sit in a cupboard with a bottle!
