Can anyone advise on the best place to buy a new or used camping car in France preferably an old style voltswagon or similar compact vehicle

I think the VW campers are rather overpriced as they have a sort of cult following. If you want something compact look for a Camping Car Fourgon which is basically a van conversion rather than a pupose built body built onto a van chassis:
