Estimates for Car Repairs

Post by Buzzbee »

Our seond car broke down in July. We were told by the garage who came to colelct the vehicle that due to the holidays he couldnt repair it until September, and gave us a verbal estimate for the repairs.
We explicitly asked that the repairs not exceed 750 euros. When we went to collect the car after 10 weeks, we were presented with abill for 1,850 euros!
We were told in no uncertain terms that we had to pay as we had not signed an estimate. We had never been offered one! They did work on the car which we did not require as it is a really old jallopy and just needed for dirty work or in emergencies.

So I urge you all - take note - get a written estimate which you sign, and ask that you be telephoned prior to any additional or extra work being done to problems found.

Probably not of help to you now but a note to other members of the forum.
As reported in the latest edition of 'The Connexion', a lady in the Var had some building work carried out, subject to a devis.
Subsequently the builder presented her with a bill for 4,500 Euros for additional work. A local appeal court ruled she should pay but the Cour de Cassation (the highest appeal court in the land) ordered costs against the builder as he had no proof of the work being requested.
"If extras are to be added they should be subject to an avenant (an amendment clause signed by both parties), otherwise a builder cannot make the client pay more for them."
The moral is, always get a signed, agreed devis before any work is carried out.
