Routes to Spain

Post by Allan »

We fly from Barcelona on Sunday and I am not sure of the best route to take to avoid the Gilets Jaunes.

I have already decided to leave on Saturday and stay overnight in Barcelona but I would prefer a longer drive to sitting in a queue of traffic.

I fully expect the Autoroute and the road through Le Perthus to be blocked but is the coast road usually free of problems? It seems an obvious option but presumably easily blocked.

Are there other routes that are likely to be clear?

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi, not sure whether you are willing to take such a detour but the road over St Laurent de Cerdans-Coustouges-Figueras is never been a problem for us. Good luck! I am heading to Beziers airport on Saturday and am also looking at alternative routes.

You can go via the col de Banyuls, which locals tend to use in the summer when other routes are clogged (though normally just by traffic). It is narrow and wriggly and the edges aren’t protected, but it’s not fundamentally lethal. My sister has sworn that she will never drive it again, and I hate it because I suffer from vertigo. But you are made of sterner stuff: you could do worse, if you have problems with the coast road (though you will need to judge before you get far into Banyuls town: you would need to hang a right).

If the coming weekend is anything like last weekend, don’t even consider coming anywhere near Le Boulou on Saturday...but Sunday it was completely clear and we sailed into Spain with hardly a car in sight. Coast road a pretty option. Enjoy!

Had a fabulous drive around the coast which looked spectacular in the December sunshine. Not a Gilet Jaune in sight until we encountered 2 guys wearing them at the frontier. It turned out they had broken down.
