insurance for camping car

Post by tia »

Hi,
a friend of mine ( french ) has bought a camping car in the uk. He cannot change the plates apparently because it would be too expensive and complicated and planned on just taking it back when necessary for the mot. He is having problems with the insurance though, he has insured it in france and has now been told that if he does have an accident then the company will not cover him because the camping car is on british plates. His question is ; can he insure it in the uk even though he is not resident there? If not does anyone know a company who would insure him ?
Any recommendations for insurance compagnies( bearing in mind he has contacted the main french ones) welcome.
I seem to recall reading something about english plated cars and insurance but cannot find it.
any advice would be appreciated
thank you
Phipplebert

Lisa talk to Simon - his insurance broker (Nick) is English and fantastic he will tell you how it all works...I'm pretty sure it's a non runner insuring it as an English vehicle unless it spends time in England but I'm not 100% sure to save definitively. I do know that there are companies claiming to do all sorts (and people claiming to know all about it) but that some of it is not very water tight...Nick will know the answers to it all.

Try Andrew Copeland Insurance. They might fit the bill.

You could try contacting the Caravan Club in England. They provide motorhome insurance and would offer good advice. However, as I understand it, it is illegal not to re-register the vehicle here unless it spends more than six months out of France each year - or have things changed?

Russell.

Andrew Copeland specialise in insuring Brit vehicles in France. Don't know anything about their prices, but have heard good things about their policies

Hi russel, my friend says he cannot change the plates on it , something to do with the conformity. I am no expert in camping cars so wouldn't have a clue to why. I know it is one that you need a lorry licence to drive.
