We're staying in Collioure for a week from 22nd - 29th September and did some of the usual things before, so are looking for more things, new things & events to go to this year, please - all suggestions & invitations are welcome!

Many thanks,

Isn’t it annoying when you lose a reply before you’ve sent it for no obvious reason?

The French have fixed ideas about the length of the holiday season, so the “animationsâ€￾ will have thinned out by the time you get here. There is griff in the local paid-for paper (“L’Indépendentâ€￾) which has a website and apps

https://www.lindependant.fr

There is a tourist office here

http://www.collioure.com

and they might even answer the phone if you try.

They can surely give you griff about nice walks and probably bike hire. Once you get here, you will probably find that there are still free papers with adds for discos and gigs.

You could go for long lunches in Spain. Or buy a guidebook. Or get the “bus à 1 Euroâ€￾ and consider yourself invited to buy me a beer in Port-Vendres.

I’ve found that the last people who know about the coming events are those who live here full time: if we miss it this year, it will come around next year (crossed fingers).

And here's a little bit more about it - not so much what's to do but plenty about the history and heritage.

You can try one of the guided tours, either in French or Catalan:

Thank you all - We went to Collioure back in 2016 and love it!

..... unfortunately, our languages aren't good enough for a tour in French or Catalan - we went to Lyon a while back and a local English-speaking city guide took us around for the day, and it was wonderful and made the trip!

You don't say what floats your boat.Nor how far you are prepared to travel.

If history is your thing then where do we start? You will be based in what is effectively an open air museum of military buildings. On the general architectural front everything from neolithic tombs to avant garde 21st century creations. Interested in wildlife? A trip up the coast and you may see flamingos. Fancy a glass of wine. Visit a cave. The choice is enormous. Eating out your thing? Check out the numerous recommendations on this site.

Want to have a window into the lives of ordinary French people? Try a big Centre Commercial. Great idea for a wet day.

All of those things float our boat, Gus - thank you!

We are into most things of a cultural/historic/local people/interesting/unusual nature - I guess almost anything except sport or high opera lol.

The one thing I would like to do is take Le Petit Train Jaune, but I think it depends on whether anybody is running a coach trip to the terminus, as we aren't hiring a car and taking the train via Perpignan takes a while and makes timings dicey it seems.

Alternatively, you might try Le Train Rouge https://www.letrainrouge.fr/.

This runs on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday during your stay. The connections from and to Collioure are not great but you could leave Collioure by train at 7.52 and arrive in Rivesaltes at 8.27. Then at 10.00 take Le Train Rouge to Axat arriving at 12.45.

Have lunch at Le Central (say) and then take the train back at 15.15 arriving in Rivesaltes at 17.35. The next train to Collioure leaves Rivesaltes at 18.34 and gets into Collioure at 19.05.

Please though check all the above dates and times

I enjoyed the train rouge, in a low-key way, but I had a car to get to Rivesaltes and all year to do it in. It’s a big investment of time in a one week holiday.

Just to contradict myself, there is an interesting, if bleak, museum at Rivesaltes at a former army/refugee/internment camp. Almost everyone who fell on hard times in France since the 30s passed through there.

Transport details are here

I found a firm - Argeles Tourisme Voyage - that does coach trips picking up in Collioure - but unfortunately they all start incredibly early in the morning - like before 7am!

..... so if you're friendly & would like to share taxi costs for an excursion somewhere during the last week of September, please let me know?

This has being preying on the back of my mind for a few weeks. Not so much that you don’t want “high operaâ€￾ (there’s not much of that around down here, more’s the pity) but that you can dismiss it by “lolâ€￾.

There’s quite a lot of rebroadcast opera at cinemas nowadays. Go and watch it until you get your head straight. And depending on the show, take some Kleenex.
