Guitarists group - Maureillas

When I was in the area recently I was informed by my friendly agent immobilier that there is a group of guitarists, mainly English, who play in El Tap café/restaurant in Maureillas las Illas. In fact his information turned out to be inaccurate: they don't play there every Monday, as he thought, but ...
Perhaps it's a mistake to look for someone local. I have always had most problems communicating over the phone: no body language, no "rescue me, I'm just an anglais" if you are dealing with a call centre in Morocco'. I'm sure there are people who do it over, eg, Skype, if you look....

Having spent much of the last few days discussing home improvements with artisans who speak little or no English, I would certainly agree that this is a very good way of improving one's spoken language. I do find it rather disappointing that a lot of people take the easy way out and look for expats ...

Kate, do you know if Liz Jarry is a native speaker? I could also benefit from one-to-one tuition. I know from my experiences of language classes back home that native speakers have an advantage over even the best of non-native speakers in terms of subtle nuances etc - though this is probably less im...

Making contact

I don't know if this would be considered a legitimate use of this forum. I've just bought a house in Céret and am here for a week or so to sort things out (my plan is to use it as a "maison secondaire" rather than moving here full time). Anyway, I thought it would be good to get to know other expats...

Apparently a civil engineer is "ingénieur des travaux publics" according to Word Reference (a very useful site if you don't know it - http://www.wordreference.com/enfr/civil%20engineer).

Sounds a pretty desperate situation - I hope you find a satisfactory solution.

On the subject of insurance, I wonder if anyone has recommendations for house insurance. I gather it is compulsory on buying a house, which I am anticipating coming to a satisfactory conclusion in the next few weeks. The ones I am considering at present are Aviva and Credit Agricole, but purely on t...

Yes, for the last few weeks I've been playing a kind of "currency roulette" trying to pick the right time to make forward contracts with a currency dealer for my house purchase - something other cash buyers will probably be familiar with. For people who aren't, the idea is that you fix your exchange...

Thanks, Sus, for your suggestions. The purchase seems to be going ahead - just waiting for the signed Compromis de Vente to be returned to me. I put the delay down to a combination of the Christmas post and French bureaucracy.

Termites

I should bring you up to date with my termite issues. After further consultation with the agent immobilier to ascertain what and where the evidence of termites was, it turned out that there was one piece of wood next to a log store that had evidence of having been chewed by them. On this basis I dec...

Termites

Thanks for the various advice and warnings! To clarify, the inspection has been done and is included in the "diagnostics" with the compromis de vente, as I gather is normal practice. No signs of termites have been found in the house but there are signs of them in an "abri de bois" outside, as I ment...

It sounds more to me that the expert is just covering his arse Yes, that was my impression - he didn't seem to see it as a particularly urgent situation, just recommending "assainissement", or decontamination. Interestingly the agent suggested the same thing as interiors66, just getting rid of the ...

Termites

We have some friends who had to have treatment for termites.

Do you know if your friends had the problem in the house or just in the garden?

Termites

My house purchasing plans are moving ahead apace, in that I have had an offer accepted and am now grappling with the compromis de vente. In the diagnostics there is a mention of evidence of termites in the "abris de bois" in the garden but not in the house. The agent immobilier assures me that this ...

In reply to Rhys, my budget is up to around 400,000€ (assuming the exchange rate doesn't change dramatically). I gather from research so far that "piscines" do indeed need regular maintenance, but maybe those who have them could comment on how onerous and/or expensive this is. Certainly the prospect...
You don't mention if you want a village house/farm or villa but you get any of those around there.
I was thinking of a villa or village house (though the latter I get the impression is likely to have less garden and no swimming pool). Where to buy a house

As mentioned in an earlier post, I am planning to buy a house in the area, and up to now have been looking in Céret, my favourite town that I've seen so far in the area. However I have been wondering whether to consider other places, as finding somewhere in Céret that ticks all the boxes is proving ...

Best ways of getting to know locals

I have recently joined this group, as I am looking to buy a house in Céret. I notice that most of the activities etc mentioned in the forum seem to be aimed mainly or exclusively at English-speaking expatriates. However a major part of my interest in buying a house here is to get to know French peop...
