Sounds great! I used to do a bit of riding with my late wife, but haven't done any for over 20 years, and it would be good to take it up again on one of my visits to the area

Do you know anything about the Centre Equestre at Maureillas?

Is the phone line through Orange? If so, they have an English speaking helpline, which I have found helpful (though I gather this hasn't been everyone's experience). Anyway the number (from the UK) is 0033 9 69 36 39 00.

Bon courage!
I was never much of a fan of Cloclo.
Well, admittedly he had a rather cheesy public image, but he wrote some good songs - not least "Comme D'Habitude", the original version of "My Way", and to my mind a far superior song.

French will

When I changed my will recently in the UK I was advised by the solicitor to get a separate French will to cover my French house. However I gather that the default in France is that your property goes to your children, which is what I was planning anyway. In view of this, I wondered whether I really ...

Don't know about an English-speaking IT expert, but Orange has an English-speaking helpline, which I have found useful - 09 77 55 72 27. I bought a house in Céret just over a year ago, and though I'm not a permanent resident, I'm keen to meet people in the area, you if you'd be interested in meetin...

What method have you looked at already? I would have thought the quickest way is to get a train from Argeles to Perpignan with taxis at either end - the train takes about 15 mins. Alternatively you can get the 1€ bus to Argeles, then buses from Perpignan centre to the airport, which of course woul...

Maybe a bit of both? A lot of people lack confidence in using the internet, and some just aren't very good at learning foreign languages. In the French class I attend there are people who have been coming for 10 years or more but whose command of ihe language remains very limited.

Bonbons

"Bon courage" is one of my favourites - "good luck" is probably the nearest English equivalent, but doesn't quite capture it. As I understand it, it's used when someone is facing something challenging or difficult.

Maybe in the current political climate the best we can hope for in a leader is that they're not totally outrageous. For me a centrist such as Macron is preferable to a socially conservative pro-Russian Thatcher admirer like Fillon - though either would be preferable to Marine ale Pen.

Get ready for Marine

According to the latest "sondages" Macron is now more or less level with Fillon, and should easily beat Le Pen in the second round (https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_de_sondages_sur_l'élection_présidentielle_française_de_2017). Admittedly opinion polls have not had a good track record recentl...

I have a large quantity of bamboo harvested from my garden. If anyone can make use of any if it for garden canes or anything else, they are welcome to take it for no charge. It comes in various thicknesses, from c 2 cm to c 4 cm. I am based in Céret.

According to my brother, who is a keen yachtsman (the proper sort, powered by sails), these superyachts rarely stray far from the marina, and even when they do, the work is all done by paid minions while the owners and their entourage sit around sipping G & T's. All seems to have more to do with sho...

Hmm. Though I understand your frustration, I can't help thinking you're jumping to conclusions by assuming the problems at Dover are down to "the nature of the French". A lot of British people seem to have an animosity towards the French, which I've never understood, as I've always found most people...

I can recommend the Hotel Casa Païral in Collioure - attractive, characterful old building with a nice garden and swimming pool. Also has its own car park, which is a definite plus in Collioure. Thanks to Kate and Russell for the info. Breathalysers were on sale for £5.99 for 2 on the ferry so I thought I might as well get them even though it seems you can get away with not having them quite easily. Interestingly, hire cars I've had in France don't seem to have them - are they exempt, or do...

Compulsory breathalysers

I'm about to take my car across to France and wanted to check up what the current position is with compulsory breathalysers. As I understand it, they are theoretically obligatory but there has been a ruling that they can't impose a fine (which I gather is only 11€ anyway, so hardly worth the bother ...
