Broadband / phone for isolated properties

Hi, We're looking for a very isolated property but, for our business, also need reasonably good, reliable internet speeds (over 2mbs) for Skyping and telephone that supports packages for free calls to many countries. How realistic is this?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Allan - very reassuring. Whereabouts do you live? Are there other sheltered areas you know about?

How bad are the winds?

Hi, We were thinking of moving from the UK to the Pyrenees-Orientale for the greater amount of sunshine hours. The fly in the weather ointment seems to be the winds (Tramontane and Le Marin). Looking just at the data, the Ariege seems a better compromise - better sunshine hours than the UK (but less...

That's really very helpful - especially that Satellite isn't good for Skyping - which we'll need to do a lot of.

Mmmm - thanks for that.
When we buy I should be 62-3 years old and my wife 57-8. Should that make any material difference?

Thanks Sue and Paul. Have heard somewhere that the house taxes tend to be between a half or a quarter of UK council tax - would you think that's true?

Thanks Pearsponb. Yes, my wife has an internet business so this is pretty crucial. What do you know about service reliability (weather dependence) for satellite in the PO?

Away from the village

we would like an isolated house - so somewhere between up the mountain and the village. Is there a way to estimate likely Taxe Fonciere and Taxe d'Habitation for a 3 bedroom house with land?

Thanks a lot. I know VOIP means voice over internet protocol but I haven't got as far as knowing if it's a "good thing" or not! Is it from your perspective? Many thanks for the TV-download speed tip - we've been told that 2mbs is the norm outside towns so TV buffering is likely to be an issue as we ...

That's very helpful Kate, thanks. We're looking for an isolated, 3 bedroom place with a couple of hectares - any guesses for the 2 taxes?

Council Tax equivalent?

We're thinking of moving to the PO - is there a Council Tax equivalent and, approximately, how much does one pay?

Internet speeds

We're thinking of moving to the PO and we have an internet-based business. What kind of download speeds (Mgb/s) can you get, especially in the more mountainous areas? Which are the best providers?

Cheap international calls

We're thinking of moving to the PO but we rely on making many international calls. In the UK we can buy a "boost" to get a low, flat rate to most developed countries. Can you get this in the P.O. and with which telecoms companies?
