Re: Pickled Onions

Probably be tastier and better quality ....and the hand over will be more fun. They will certainly be tastier, and better quality, even if I say it myself. But the handover won’t be specially glamorous: we have a tryst with Allan next Saturday at the giant Carrefour in Claira. If the “Jilly Jones” ...

Re: UK ‘Not Allowed’ to Leave the EU

I can’t help mentioning your typo “the UK is not allowed to leave the UK”.

If only we could: we could set up a government in exile. All 48% of us, at the last count.

Re: UK ‘Not Allowed’ to Leave the EU

Can you point to any reliable source of news that says anything even remotely like this? As things stand, we are headed out of the EU, pretty soon, whether we or M Macron like it or not. Assuming it doesn’t all go tits up in the HoC next week (and even that of course doesn’t stop us leaving the EU: ...

Re: Pickled Onions

Do you make the spices up from scratch or can you buy ready made pickling spices here? I went off Hayward’s a while back as they were all rock hard. I emailed them to ask if they had changed the production process or whether it was just a seasonal change. They didn’t reply but just sent me a vouche...

Pickled Onions

I had an exchange about pickled onions with Allan years ago (as one does). He asked me where I bought mine: I said that I generally made my own, but hadn’t found any suitable onions here. Well now I have. Lidl sell what they call “oignons saucier” at €1.25 for 500 gm. They are a bit too big for the ...

Re: Amazon Echo arrives in France

They currently have the second-generation Echo Dot (ie the one they superseded a couple of months ago) for €24.99. The latest ones may have slightly better sound, for €35 more, but not to a degree that I would bother about, given the use that I am going to make of it (or indeed them).

Thanks Martyn. Have passed this on - and given them the link to the forum so they can check in for themselves. Thanks for addressing one of my obsessions, though if your querists have just sold up, it’s probably too late for them to benefit much from the forum. It should be difficult for money to g...

Re: Amazon Echo arrives in France

Please forget this: I hadn’t scrolled down far enough on the settings page to find the choice of language. But I do find the Alexa app a fairly extreme example of the sort of app where you basically just have to prod around until you find what you need, or not.

Re: Amazon Echo arrives in France

Does anyone have any idea how to change the language on an Echo device? I had to reconnect my echo when I got a new WiFi network, and it has taken the opportunity to switch to French. I wouldn’t mind much, except that I have other ones that speak English, and it will be a bit wearing to remember whi...

Re: 4G Internet

I’ve been happily using SIMs from Free for data for nearly 2 years with no issues. I have scoured Free’s terms and conditions and have found no mention of any restriction on their use, so I think the stories are just an urban myth. I’ve found 4G very reliable, certainly more so that the ADSL that I...

Re: 4G Internet

I can’t speak for Allan, but I doubt that there is anything specially bad about Orange. Any ADSL service from anyone is going to be delivered over Orange’s “historic” local wires in any event. The quality of your service will largely depend on how long they are (and how often they’ve been patched): ...

4G Internet

I had intended to post asking for advice, but the site was on holiday so I went ahead anyway. The big storm ten days ago fried the internet on my freebox, and I got so brassed off trying to report the fault that I started thinking about what my freebox sub was worth. We had managed perfectly well fo...

I don’t mean to be difficult, but it’s not clear from your post where your parents spend most of their time. You might expect that someone with late-stage Alzheimer’s who spent significant time here would already be in touch with French services who could have helped you with this. In any event, if ...

Re: Updated Forum Now On Line. Give it a go...

One other question. Has anything happened to improve the Search function (particularly as regards posts predating the update)? The only times I’ve tried it, it was pretty much a lemon. This is not meant to be a criticism: it would just be worth knowing whether it’s worth bothering with any more than...

One small point. The site used to say whether you actually had any (unread) private messages, and if so how many. It was quite useful: considering how much flak I have sometimes attracted on the forum, I used to expect lots more as PMs. But in the event I have almost never had them. But I have had ...

Re: Amazon Echo arrives in France

Thanks. I should have checked. If I was rewiring the place from scratch, I’d have smart wall switches (almost) everywhere. As it is, it’s probably easier and cheaper for me to talk to Alexa at the level of the bulb, or in a few places through in-line switches down-circuit from the wall switches (the...

Well done Martyn. Do the Ikea bulbs do anything other that turn on and off, e.g. do or change colour? Do they respond at all to the switches at all? e.g. To turn on with a switch, turn it off first and then back on? Or are your switches now redundant? It is always satisfying to solve a problem. It seems ok with a current post. I don’t suppose that the sky will fall if a search for my posts from 2015 comes out a bit garbled.

Assuming that the search works now. That’s for after dinner.

Glad to see it back. It always was a bit dicey when it came to rendering anything other than plain text (ie characters like”£*&@“%) at least when entered on my four year old iPad. Re: Changing electricity supplier

My gripe is that despite telling them my exact annual consumption, they insisted on asking a whole host of irrelevant questions and then coming up with a supposed monthly consumption that was at least 50€ a month less than it would actually be. Unfortunately they are not used to dealing with cust...

I wouldn’t claim to have never done a “sardonic take-downâ€￾ of a post which seemed (to me) to deserve one: no-one is obliged to agree.

What surprised me was your pre-emptive criticism of what you anticipated would be my comment on your post. Which I wouldn’t, apart from that, have bothered to respond to at all. I’m happy to take flak for what I do say, but it’s a bit rich to take flak, in advance, for what you imagine I might say. And - as you say - I don’t suppose that I will ever know why I should be happy about it.

The sad thing is that I found your post quite sympathetic, as I’ve already made clear.
My mistake if this was a bit garbled. I thought that I was responding to Jethro. I hadn’t realised that Gus was just poking his nose in to add a bit of freelance snark. The substance of what I said doesn’t much change. Two fools for the price of one.

Re: Changing electricity supplier

Allan wrote:Has anyone else changed their supplier of electricity?

I've just gone through the process today, a visit to the dentist would have been more pleasurable.

A few months ago I registered on the website for the Perpignan group, which claimed to have negotiated a 16% discount for people living in the area. Unfortunately they turned out to be inept, their website would not recognise my point of delivery, their promised 'phone back' never happened and their guaranteed 24 hour email response was non-existant.

I gave up on them and looked at Leclerc who claim to offer 20% of your electricity spend back in vouchers. Strangely when you look at their offering, the prices after the 20% are hardly different to those that include 15% from other suppliers.

For a while I thought that they must do arithmetic differently in France to the rest of the world but it turns out the clue to their bizarre calculations is in the TTC bit. Electricity here has a price per KW hour but then departmental and commune taxes are added which of course are not subject to any discount. Because these vary throughout France, the providers seem to make an assumption for the calculation and so the numbers never add up.

I finally lost the will to live and went with CDiscount, mainly because they called me and their fictitious numbers looked better than any one else's.

At the end of it all, I did the sums and actually saved about 6%. Needless to say, the contract arrived and was wrong, I told them 5 times that I have an 18KVA supply which appeared as 15KVA on the contract and their proposed monthly payment was a good 50€ a month less than it should be. The cynic in me could easily believe that the low figure was intended to induce me.

Despite giving them my exact consumption of electricity over the last 12 months, they insisted on estimating my consumption based on how we heat the house and how many fridges we have.

The UK press has been full of stories recently about providers benefitting because people can't be bothered to swap. If my experience is anything to go by then I am not surprised.
Once you get your smart “Linkyâ€￾ meter, quite soon in theory, your problems with estimated bills should be a thing of the past. The bad news, by some accounts, is that they will either cook your brain (by a new thing called electro-magnetic radiation), or steal your privacy, or both.
