Thanks for all the replies. We have actually been that way twice last week, as it turns out. There were horrendous delays on 1 of the trips, both on the autoroute and RN, worse returning to France than Spain-bound. The second trip back was unimpeded, as we came via La Vajol, which was (h)airy and pi...

police checks Figueres

Have now put this post in correct thread, and also jumping ahead of spam too...

We have arranged to meet friends for lunch at Sancho Panza near Figueres one day this week. We've heard of police checks lasting hours...does anyone know about them? Am wondering if it's worth the hassle

I'm interested to know about this, as I'll be exchanging my UK license soon. 2 years ago OH had to get a certificate of entitlement, easily, from DVLA Swansea, but that was because there were errors on his UK license, which had been there since the 70's and gone unnoticed until he got his French lic...

Agree. but at 60 or more euros a go, it's definitely only worth it for a long journey. As you say, do the maths. It's worth adding though that there is often a 'découverte senior' reduction on some routes without buying the annual subscription

I've been successful a few times in getting the 1€ train booked. Agree you MUST book 21 days in advance, to the hour, for the train you want. Do a dummy run on an earlier date, without actually booking, to see how it would pan out. Sometimes I've had to settle for a long wait in eg Narbonne or Mon...

The fat lady hasn't sung yet though. Of course you're right. But if he can keep away from choirboys for the next fortnight he should be home free. Not that I mean to imply that he would have any difficulty with that. So is that the choice? ... a fat lady or a gay paedophile...??? Funny I didn't rea...

VW Elne

We have had our VW serviced every year for more than 10 years at VW Elne (Beccus Janssen). Today I tried to ring them but the number is unobtainable. Does anyone know if they are still in business? I know they were absorbed into VW Perpignan (Europauto) a year or two ago. Going to Elne instead of Pe...

Just for information, I have been refused permission to sell poppies in the village - it requires the authorisation of the prefecture. However they will still be on sale in Intermarché Saint André and Café des Artistes Laroque from Thursday 10th morning

We have been contacted by friends who are camping near Argelès. their UK rear number plate has fallen off their car on the way down through France. Who knows where the nearest supplier of a number plate (of sorts) might be. Fairly urgent!

They usually arrive to nest in our porch around April. They nested in my bedroom a couple of years ago (I was away, and hadn't shut the window properly) and I didn't have the heart to evict them. I moved to the spare room and spread some plastic on the floor. Well worth it to keep them around. I on...

croquettes probably not so good in a curry - a bit crunchy. But when I open a tin of Frankie's dog food, I do sometimes think it smells good enough to eat myself. Way back, one of our breakfast-hungry children came upstairs to us having a Sunday lie-in and announced that the dog's food didn't really...
