Re: Wooden windows

There is an exhibition that starts tomorrow in Perpignan, The Foire Expo. It is a bit like the ideal home exhibition and there are always loads of glazing and joinery firms there. It may be worth a look. You can get a free admission ticket here https://pole-artisan.com/realisations/la-foire-expositi...

Funeral advice please

A french friend has died suddenly and the funeral is on Thursday. This will be the first funeral that we have attended in France so we are unfamiliar with local customs. In England we would have sent flowers to the funeral, normally via the undertaker. Is that normal in France? The service is in a c...

Re: Forum quiet

In the last few days we've had the calamity in Paris and a major disruption of the D914 at Paulilles. But not a word on here. Which probably tells us all we need to know. Merisin Au contraire! I don’t think it tells us anything. This forum has always been more of a reference source, or a place for ...

Is data protection killing the web?

Is anyone else as irritated as I am at every single website that I visit popping up a notice telling be how they value my privacy and need my permission to store a 'cookie' on my computer? Worse still, they could easily use the said 'cookie' to record my response and not bother to ask me again. Unfo...

Re: Saga Credit Card Service Ends March 19

I use a currency conversion company, Currency Uk, to transfer sterling to euros on a regular basis. Like other companies offering the same service they give an exchange rate much better than the mainstream banks and do not charge fees. I use a French credit card which I then settle with the euros f...

I have never found anywhere in Perpignan that offers anything like the choice available at the Wine Palace in Figueres. Besides the choice, the prices are significantly better.

Re: 4G Internet

Free have just announced their latest “box” (which has been trailed for about three years). It seems to be extremely capable, but they have taken so long that I have already got every capability that they offer that is any use to me. And all for €60 a month. They also have three other boxes at dimi...

Re: 4G Internet

Currently Free are offering 60gb of 4G a month for 8.99€ a month for 12 months including all calls to fixed and mobile numbers in France and all calls to fixed numbers in most other countries. The offer is for a year and then reverts to their normal tariff of 19.99€ a month for 100gb and the same in...

Re: 4G Internet

But, we do have a reasonable 4G signal, so I took a punt and bought a Huawei B315 and a Poynting external aerial on Ebay & Amazon respectively. I bought a new SIM from RedBySFR giving 40GB a month for 10 euro and we'll see how it goes consumption wise. They also have 100GB for 20 euro which is stil...

Re: Irish passports

I agree that an Irish passport would get you in the EU queue but surely Irish citizens do not have to have an Irish passport just as you can be a citizen of Britain without a British passport. Ireland defines an Irish citizen as someone born on the island of Ireland, or their descendants, that doesn...

Re: Cafe gourmand

Like Martyn i’m not shy but I don’t normally eat desserts, particularly since it is rare to find a decent one. Sometimes my wife and I share a café gourmande as she doesn’t drink coffee.

The only decent one that I can think of is at La Llonja in Port Argeles which is pretty decent for most things.

Routes to Spain

We fly from Barcelona on Sunday and I am not sure of the best route to take to avoid the Gilets Jaunes. I have already decided to leave on Saturday and stay overnight in Barcelona but I would prefer a longer drive to sitting in a queue of traffic. I fully expect the Autoroute and the road through Le...

Re: Amazon Echo arrives in France

The product is international, if you download the English Alexa App then a french bought product works perfectly. Martyn is correct that if you buy in France you get a French transformer/plug, add to that the price is lower in France and Amazon UK will not deliver to France then the decision is pret...

I have just heard that a charity food collection scheduled tomorrow has been cancelled (Martyn please note)because the commercial centre at Claira is once again going to be blocked off by the Gilets Jaunes. Do you make the spices up from scratch or can you buy ready made pickling spices here? I went off Hayward’s a while back as they were all rock hard. Re: 4G Internet

I’ve been happily using SIMs from Free for data for nearly 2 years with no issues. I have scoured Free’s terms and conditions and have found no mention of any restriction on their use, so I think the stories are just an urban myth. I’ve found 4G very reliable, certainly more so that the ADSL that I ...

Much better but it still uses nearly half the screen on an iPad before anything useful appears. The banner could be smaller if the word Forum was moved to the right of the logo and there is a substantial white space below the banner. Clearing cache is all very good but I don’t know an option to clea...

Re: UPDATED FORUM NOW ON LINE. GIVE IT A GO.

Good to see the update, your hard work is appreciated. Viewing it on a iPad, everything looks very BIG, the banner at the top takes up half the screen which seems unnecessary. I think a smaller banner and smaller text would make a more pleasurable experience. From what I have read, it is easier to p...

A tale of 2 chickens

I've eaten chicken twice this week, once in a Michelin starred restaurant, the other was in a fast food takeaway The Michelin starred restaurant described the dish as 'Suprême de volaille fermière cuit tendrement. La peau bien craquante en condiment sésame'. . Despite the somewhat florid descript...

I now have a Linky meter, despite that , it seems that the suppliers of electricity don't actually want to use it. They want to estimate annual consumption, divide that by 11 and take that by direct debit each month with an adjustment in the 12th month,

It seems somewhat pointless when they could simply collect the cost of electricity actually consumed.

My gripe is that despite telling them my exact annual consumption, they insisted on asking a whole host of irrelevant questions and then coming up with a supposed monthly consumption that was at least 50€ a month less than it would actually be.
