I like Vernet. I have some friends who moved there from further down the valley and love it as far as I know. Here's a bit more about it. martyn has described it rather well, the shabby chic etc....and a great curry house as he says! https://anglophone-direct.com/vernet-les-bains-2/  What a sp...

Re: Vernet les Bains

I have seen an ultra cheap studio of sale in Vernet which rather tempts me as a summer retreat from the heat of Béziers and the plain. What are the main drawbacks of the town? I doubt I would be there much in the Summer .... I think there are people here who live round there. For myself, I stay th...

Giving fictious figures just as an example. You pay someone 55 hours at 11€ making 605€ a month or so later you have to pay a little over 300€ in charges so you have paid out let us say 925€ for argument's sake. Next year half of that is allowed against tax In my case it has been enough to e...

Would it be possible to hobble there from the Station?
I limp badly and walk with one or two sticks, but I love to take the train and get out a bit.
I can manage 400/500 metres easily enough.
The only problem is that the restaurants near stations aren't usually very exciting..

Surprisingly, the ones I enjoyed tasting most were white. The vins primeur that I have enjoyed most over the last five years or so have all been white, often sauvignon blancs. Interesting about the "Tarragona rioja at 2.99 (from Lidl would you believe) " I was going to ask if there was anything dri...

If you are not resident in France, but just have a holiday home here which you have had for less than 15 years you pay value added tax on a sliding scale.

I agree with what has been said about Insurance.
A major problem is that French people seem to accept this as normal..'c'est comme ça en France' so there is no impetus for change.

There are no experts: it is a profitable industry which creates loads of myths just to sell its products. I have just enjoyed a bottle of local wine (unknown, but very nice) at 2.99 I also have had excellent wines at 12 euros..but the difference has nothing to do with the coefficient The second cert...

Restaurants in the Languedoc

At the right hand top of the page in large letters it says Languedoc-Roussillon, but I notice that most people on this board seem very firmly based in the PO rather than the Languedoc. I'd be quite happy to post a few reviews of restaurants in my patch, (Languedoc, in particular the western Hérault)...

I think people are ignoring Chris's posting
"Beware of the La Palme services on the A9 north of Perpignan.

It is frequented by unsavoury types who will, for example, approach you when you are filling your car"
This is much more common than tyre slashing etc

Do they do it deliberately to annoy us or are they just stupid/inefficient? . You have my sympathy. I sometimes darkly wonder if it is to create work to justify their jobs, but the simplest explanation is that there is often no such thing as a centrally standardised set of requirements. Despite the...
