Thanks again, Martyn, your help is much appreciated. So this means that with an income of 50 000 both spouses pay tax on 25 000, for example? That would make such a big difference. One more question about healthcare: I have read that you pay 8 % of your taxable income to PUMA. What would a spouse pa...

Hi Martyn thank you so much for writing all this. It changes the picture a lot  No, we do not seem to understand the income tax as it is applied to couples. We had the impression that it punishes the lower earning partner by making both pay tax at the higher rate. If that is not the case. do yo...

We have done a bit more research now. What we found is a dealbreaker for us are the extreme amount of taxes and contributions. They are massively higher then in the Uk and we would need to earn almost double as much as we do now to get to the same standard of livng as we have now (not a lavish stand...

how long can you stay in your second home at any one time?

My husband (British) and I (European passport) thinking of buying a second home in France. My husband is retired, I have a busy internet business (doing counselling via skype for people around the world) in the UK. I understand that you must not spend longer that 6 months in France and then you carr...

How much tax and contributions?

I just made a calculation based on the information I could glean from the internet. Based on an income of 50.000 Euros you would pay 50% in income tax, social contribution tax and house tax in France. Add to that that living expenses are 10% higher than in the UK. In the UK I pay roughly 30% - a hug...

I spent numerous holidays in France all my life including being part of a sort of commune in the Dordogne in the 80s. However, I know that holidays never equate to actually living in the country. What I was looking for are some information about the society. For example, I could go on for hours abou...

Warn me about the downside of moving to France

We plan to move France in the near/medium future. Money won't be a problem as we have an internet business and a pension to live of (which will be greatly increased by the difference in house prices). One of us has an European passport so we can still escape the sinking ship of the impending post-br...

thanks, guys, this is really great. I appreciate the advice. We are very aware of the language barrier. I have done it all before as I am not British and know what it means to learn a language so that you can deal with everything life throws at you. I start with reading children books - possibly on ...

ah, thanks, already feeling better :D dedicated line n English? that sounds fantastic. Do you know which of the providers is best for cheap international calls? I also need to phone all around the world (as back up for skype) - when my clients have weak internet). Here in Britain it costs me near to...

thanks for all the replies. thanks for the warnings, Martyn, :)) keep them coming because we would like to know as many pitfalls as possible before making 'THE MOVE'. We certainly will not buy a cheap project. The remoteness does not bother us (we live in the sticks here in Devon, miles from anywher...

How good is the internet connection

Hi, we are looking into moving to the p.o. In another thread someone said that half the houses in the p.o. struggle with internet connection and also TV and landline. Is this true? I dearly hope not. I have actually heard the opposite, namely that in France a great effort has been made to supply rem...
