If the weather is anything like it has just been, I shall be expecting to get my haricot beans for 1,50€ a Kg as there will be nobody there ! We've just had hailstones the size of marbles. . Oi,Jon, it's me that's got the "pessimistic about the weather" gig on this site. Seriously, though,it's looki...

I think we're going around in ever decreasing circles now. Great thread though! Feel you are right there,Malcolm. You are right....you can get perfect results every time by buying pre-packed stuff from M+S,but my experience of that is that it's frightfully dull. You never get to sample anything new. Very economical though and I thought that's what we were talking about. No,I thought we were talking about VFM ,...

The bottom line is that I like better clothes . I hate to wear cheap clothes. Blackduff I'd agree if we were talking cheapo clothes like the 3.99 polos from Kiabi, Blackduff, but you can buy really nice one for around a tenner, particularly if you shop, at places like M+S,the discounters like TK Maxx...

. It's a bit hit and miss though huh? Haven't we all wasted money on disappointing cheap food whilst looking for a cheap gem? Kissing frogs to find a prince? . Oh I certainly would not disagree with you there,Malcolm . But isn't experimenting, tasting and trying, half of the fun of living anywhere ?...

I'd say that it's a little unfair of you to suggest that ,just because a particular foodstuff is low price, necessarily means it's low quality or "bad for you". Sorry to bang on about it but I meant neither of those things. For me it's about value for money . . But hang on a minute,Malcolm. What di...

Re: market prices

[. However, I sometimes think we as a society get worked up about saving a few Euros on a bottle of wine, a piece of steak, a pack of bacon or a bag of veg when we are happy to spend a much larger amount in order to have a flasher car, branded clothing, smart-phones, irrigated gardens, swimming poo...

Does the beef come in the same way ? I suppose that in the case of Pork Pies,Gammon and Streaky bacon,it does help that there's no real local suppliers of fresh product to compete with ?!

Nowt wrong with frozen stuff,Malcolm, especially if ,as you say ,it's the only way to manage stock efficiently. But no frozen meat will ever compete quality wise with fresh...especially beef/steak. When I get my supplies of bacon from Norwich and fly them home,I always tuck into one lot immediately. ...

Re: market prices

I am with Malcolm on this one. Surely he wasnt asking us to go into depth on whether it makes him a profit or not but which our personal choice would be. If I am wrong and missed the point I will shut up now and go away. It's a fair point,Sue. There are two distinct viewpoints about this. I rather ...

That's fine Malcolm, and very laudable. It is all part of your customer service. But,presumably it's not your core business; the transactions that pay the mortgage and bills. You asked an admittedly simple question re bacon. Sadly it's not possible to give an equally simple answer, especially without ...

I'd agree completely with Allan on this question,Malcolm. It's one only you can answer. But,as a businessman,if I could demonstrate that the mass produced bacon sold better to more people and had higher margins, and its shelf life was more flexible, then I'd stock that. No question at all. Whether it...

There are myths and legends emanating from both sides in this field, Sue. I'd agree that supermarkets use smoke and mirrors tactics to suggest lower prices. Often the prices on offer are available,at best, rarely. But there is also some guff spouted by the local traders too. Like the one that quality...

If you work it out, good, estate-produced oils don't cost much per meal. A "fancy" bottle of local olive oil costs 12€ but it will make about 40 salads so that's 30c per salad instead of 10c using a cheap one. The problem is Jon,that you can use that argument for pretty much everything! Fillet stea...
